Loot Crates! [Resupply Crates]

Well, not quite. Lol

I was just re-reading Teh Smoo Utility Cargo idea.

I kinda had an off shoot of that. Similar, but not. Lol

Resupply Crates
These are basically cargo containers that can contain a single type of supplies (ammo for a single module type).
The amount they hold is based on the type of module it's for, and balanced accordingly.
It's not limited to weapons, you can find chaff, heatsinks, even SCB ammo, etc.
All supply crates can be scooped, and are stored in your ships cargo hold.
They would be labelled as "Supply Crate: Multicannon Ammo" or "Supply Crate: Guided Missile", etc.

Acquiring Supply Crates
Supply Crates can be looted, found, or even given, depending on the situation. You can not buy them, but you can synthesise them.
Looting: When destroying a ship, there's a chance they'll drop some supplies. These are RNG, but based on the destroyed ships loadout. So you will never loot torpedoes from a ship without a torpedo pylon. These supply crates are only legal, if the target was Wanted, if the target was clean, the supply crate is illicit.
Scavenging: You can find all sorts of random supply stashes scattered around on planets and USSs. These can be very random. These can be either legal, or illicit.
Request Resupply: Only available in conflict zones when you have selected a side. You can select your module that needs resupplying, and press "Request Resupply", your local allied T9, Anaconda, Corvette or Cutter, will fly to you, and drop the relevant supplies for you to scoop. Assuming one is in range, or available. This service has a cooldown based on your reputation with the faction. These are always legal, unless stealing from the other side.
Synthesis: Supply Crates can be synthesized from materials, and cost a small amount more materials than normal (to make the crate). Once completed, these are placed in your cargo hold. You can not synthesise Supply Crates without cargo space. These can be jettisoned or abandoned and scooped by other CMDRs or even stolen by pirates.

Using A Resupply Crate
To resupply a module, you select the module that needs resupplying, and use the option "Rearm from Supply Crate (X)" (X is the number of available supply crates for that weapon).
This will then take the module offline to resupply it, and will take roughly the time it would take to perform 2-3 normal magazine reloads. You will need to manually power the module back on, similar to the AFMU.

Miscellaneous Stuff
Supply crates can be very volatile. Colliding with one can be quite painful. They can also be shot and detonated with a small blast radius. Dumping supply crates near stations and surface ports will invoke a heft fine, and the crate will be neutralised harmlessly by a station gun.

Thoughts?

When you think about it, it's kind of amazing that the game doesn't have this already. Exploding enemies have been dropping ammo and supplies in games since long before even 1984 Elite. I can imagine that some might consider this too "gamey" but ships already drop cargo and as long as it's not super common or predictable, it would be a nice way to add things to watch out for that aren't just credit-based or part of a grind (on the contrary, the positive stimulus here is actually convenience ).

Hello, CSH. :)

Hhhhhh...

I want to love this idea, since it makes sense, but it is such an ancient, painful cliché that I just can't bring myself to like it much. Also, contrary to the good Commander Yates' suggestion, I suspect that Elite might be one of the few surviving, properly active franchises to predate loot crates* - and I quite like the conceit of ammo crates being something that hasn't been invented yet for ED. :)

*(They may have existed in a few earlier titles, but IIRC, Nintendo's Super Mario Bros, released a year later, is the title that made crates into a seemingly-ubiquitous meme. I may be wrong about this, though: my earliest gaming knowledge is mostly limited to the UK arcades and to UK-originated computer games, from the Sinclair ZX-81 onwards - Japanese works might have got there earlier than I know.)
