Lord Perseid's Zoo

I've been working on this zoo for the last few weeks. I'm quite pleased with the results so far and thought I'd share some of the finished products. The image above is the entrance to my zoo, Perseid's Zoo. Similar to my Planet Coaster park, I imagined the benefactor of the park to be Lord Percival Perseid. A fictional character who spent his life in the early 1930's and 40's as an adventurer, conservationist, philanthropist and all around "neat guy." In his later years, he devised an amusement park to commemorate and highlight some of his adventures and to bring you, the park-goer, along with him. But that's a story for the Planet Coaster forums. Instead, we are here at Perseid's Zoo. Lord Perseid loved animals, so to honor his memory, the Perseid Conservation Fund and Memorial, founded the Perseid Zoo in his honor.

The zoo welcomes you down a flagstone pathway, past the sculptures of some of Perseid's favorite animals.

After crossing the Bridge of Conservation, you arrive at the Welcome Center. All trunks point to the overhang leading you into the main building. Here you find dozens of critters from all over the world, but what makes these creatures so special is that they are all decedent from parents who Lord Perseid personally cared for himself!

Heading west out of the Welcome Center will find yourself deep in the Americas and being welcomed by our two resident Grizzly Bears Kachina (the female) and Hanwi (the male). The habitat is designed around an entry discovered in Lord Perseid's journal when he undertook his second trip to the Americas. "...On the fourth day of us visiting the Yosemite we were treated to a marvelous sighting. Not far from where we had camped was a waterfall, only active during the spring thaw... Upon arriving at the waterfall, we quickly came to the realization that, despite being here so early in the season, we were indeed not the first to witness this spectacular fall. For, not soon after our arrival, a curious bear cub came stumbling out from behind the rushing water and watched us with as much fascination as we bore towards him... His mother was quite close behind and upon spying us, let out a dissatisfied grunt that we, these intruders in her land, would be so rude as to gawk at her cub. Sensing that we were no longer welcome guests we took our leave... I could not help myself from marveling that nature truly is the best architect for those that inhabit her lands."

After viewing our grizzly bears you’ll find yourself on the Gateway to The Americas Bridge which will offer stunning views into the Grizzly Bear habitat and breathtaking sunset views over our Great Plains habitat.

It is easy for most guests to miss the small building tucked away in the corner of the Americas area. Here is our local campus of the Perseid Institute. Like many of our campuses around the world, this one is open to the public for tours and educational classes.

Most guests, however, cannot miss the wonderful aroma coming from the gardens located in front of the Perseid Institute. Which is a great thing and our pollinators think so too! These are the Mireille Perseid Pollinator Gardens. Planted by Lord Perseid’s great-granddaughter, Mireille, these gardens provide a welcoming habitat for many of our native pollinators.

Just like we feed our local bees and butterflies, we will hope to feed you too. The Taste of the Americas Food Court, is the best place to sample our own take on classic meals from the Americas. All ingredients are ethically sourced from approved farms and every dollar on every meal goes directly to support efforts that help educate farmers on responsible use of their land.

We hope you'll find your way up to our latest addition to the park before continuing on your journey. The panoramic views offered by the Great Plains Observation Platform will allow you a new look into our Great Plains habitat and allow you to get closer than ever before to our Bison and Pronghorn Antelope.
