Losing HMD connection

I did search alittle to see if this has been addressed, so forgive me if I missed it and point me in that direction please. This is pretty much Elite exclusive, I lose my HMD connection and screen goes black, it is still running on my monitor, usually have to save and exit from the monitor and restart, this happens sporadically can be 5 minutes into a session or an hour. I do have an Hdmi extension cable that I use, but like I said this doesn't happen on other games. Any ideas ?

PC Specs:

FX8350
GTX970
16 gb ram
650w power supply

Another thing to check is if the GPU isn't overclocked too high and failing? VR E: D is pretty demanding.

PS: You failed to mention which HMD brand :p

It is the USB Power management. Mine did that constantly until I fixed it. I have not had it disconnect once in the last 4 months since I changed it. Before that I lost it 1 or 2 times per game session.

I will try the USB pwr management fix.
And see if I can drop the HDMI ext., the only reason I was using it was because of the CV1 Hdmi plug pin problems, figure it was easier to replace an ext. cable then the one on the Rift.

I have the Oculus CV1

Thanks for the replies, will post the results.

Yep. The link I posted above Wood67 describes the same problem. I also posted this in case the Op is not sure what to do:

In device manager select each usb hub and controller and also the rift sensor. Right click and select properties of each. Select the power mgmt. tab. Untick "allow computer to turn off this device to save power". Just a thought as this is often the cause of your issue.

OP, when it disconnect do you get an HDMI disconnect error on oculus home? Does it happen when you touch the top of the HMD near were the connector goes in? Or when you twist it to adjust it over your head? I had to change my Rift because the first I've got was having hardware issue leading to what you are experiencing. Also, check the connector that goes in the HMD to see if it is loose. You can disconnect it and connect it back to see if it gets better.

The HDMI extension has nothing to do with it, unless the total extended cable length is nearing 15m or 50 feet for you imperials ;-) Or unless its damaged in which case you would get that consistently and not only in Elite. HDMI is nothing magic, its a plain wire, over which a digital signal is transmitted, so you either have the connection or don't. And yes, it would be easier and far cheaper to replace the extension than the rift cable.

I had this same problem (dogbite linked to the thread) and it drove me insane. It was the USB power management, but on top of that, the Inatek card kept changing the setting back after each reboot. Eventually I connected the CV1 back direct to the mobo ports, made sure all the power stuff was not set to sleep and haven't had a problem since.

But now I have the issue where the HMD setting in the ED configuration gets set to 'Off' every time I quit the game, so on next launch it loads in 2D and I have to manually go in a change it.

Gotta love technology!

Most of the time I am sitting with little to no head movement, so not twisting or pulling of cables. I do get a HDMI lost connection on oculus home and then less than a minute later it says resolved, but I still have to exit out and restart as the HMD will not go back on in Elite, it will go on in Oculus home but with lag and the pointer dot has tails across the screen when moving until Elite is closed out.

Well, all seemed well for one evening of Elite the other day, but last evening I was disconnected (black screen, and had to exit from monitor and restart) 3 times after playing for 20 minutes. I took care of the power management for all USB ports (even went in after reboot and did the inatech card ones again), Not sure if it has to do with where I was in the game, I was on a skimmer mission on a planet the whole time (more graphic intensive ?). I don't know, got frustrated and stopped playing. maybe I will try disconnecting the HMDI ext. cable, at this point the only reason I have it connected is to avoid any problems with the rift HDMI pins from connecting and disconnecting the rift. Very Frustrating since I am really enjoying this game.

One more though. You could try (if you haven't already) reseating the cable where it plugs in to the headset. It jus plugs in. Short of that, I would be inclined to reach out to Oculus support. You may have a bad cable or headset connection.

Just wanted to pipe in on the discussion to announce my joy at this statement as a whole.

DP all the way.

You can all resume now.

I would be very surprised if plugging into the DP would solve Op's issue. As well, as far as VR goes visual performance between HDMI and DP is identical as long as your port is set to "full dynamic range"

Just a thought. Are you playing the beta?

<dangerously offtopic>There is so much funny misinterpretation potential of what you have just posted that I just had to quote it :D Can't say more, it is PG-7 after all :D</dangerously offtopic>

Where do you check to see if the port is set to "full dynamic range" ?

nope, Horizons

Nvidia Control Panel/display/resolution. There is also a setting under video setting/adjust video settings if you select "with the Nvidia settings/advanced. I changed both. Can't speak to ATI but I would think it is in Catalyst CP.

I was being deliberately off-topic...I have a mild distaste for HDMI.

But as has been pointed out, there may or may not have been a small employment of euphemism there :)
