Newcomer / Intro Losing pirate missions

Hello Hello!
No more grief about never finding pirates (yeah, I have that problem too, who doesn't) but me's got an issue with the alternative offer during pirate missions:
Accept 'kill x pirates', find USS, get interdicted, meet friendly pirate offering alternative mission. Now, the original 'kill x pirates' mission's failed, even when declining the alternative.

Bug? Feature? Am I mission a trick?

I really try to love the game as I really want to love it, but so far I spend more time in hypercruise waiting than anything else- things like the above don't add to enjoyment.

What am I doing wrong about that part of the pirate missions?

Isn't pirate missions bad for making money?

I mean, if you find a pirate without a wanted status, you will be fined 6000 credits for killing him. Mission averages at 15000 credits reward, two kills, 12000 credits bounty on your head = 3000 profit?

actually once you have met the contact who makes you a new proposal, you can continue doing the original mission, Its offering you a choice what you want to do, continue the original, or do the new version offered by the contact. hitting Abandon aborts both approaches.

D'oh. That's not clear from the UI at all- as only the new offer shows. Thanks for pointing that out.

As for making little money, gotta start somewhere I guess

I know its not clear at all, i only figured it out, as i continued to try to do the original mission hunting pirates not System Authority. Once i had killed a couple of the correct type of Pirates, it actually showed the number i had killed, either above or below the number i needed to kill for the mission. ( sorry i dont remember whether it was above or below)
