Loss of merits

Please can someone explain why I have just lost over 6000+ merits, overnight.
It has changed nothing else, no bonus of 50 mil credits, I was already lvl 5 rating in the faction,
I had over 16,000 merits when I logged off yesterday, now I log on and I have just over 10,000 merits.
I need answers please.

at the weekly tickover a merit decay is applied to the merits that you have. The weekly tickover took place this morning.

Excuse my ignorance as I only read about this merit decay and not participating in Powerplay, but do you mean to say that these merits do not decay in real time?

I have been doing 50-100 every half hour, so you can only guess how long its taken me, and now nearly half are gone and your telling me its decay?? nearly half my merits were lost in DECAY, that's not decay as you call it, over 6000+ so people who had 6000 merits now have nothing, right.

All the hours put in the game have been wasted, nothing Decays that fast.

*Facepalm* Week 1 your merits half, then I believe it takes half of that each time...So say you had 1000 when it ticks over itll drop to 500 then if you got back to 1000 and then it ticked over again it would drop to 750 (The decay halfs each week, from what I know)

here is a copy/paste from the Power Play "manual"

Merits earned from previous cycles still count towards your rating at diminishing rates. Your merit total from the previous cycle is halved then added to your current cycle value. After two cycles, itsvalue is halved again before being added. After three cycles, the value is halved once more. After four cyclesthe value is no longer added.

that actually is not correct. at least according to my merits. in my opinion, its bugged.

and to the OP, did you HONESTLY think you would only have to do the work to get rank 5 ONE TIME and then enjoy 50mil a week for the rest of the game?!?!

I have to admit not yet, haven't seen a link to download.

That makes a little sense to why I Lost so many in one go, but I am still stunned, decay should only occur I believe if you do not play the game for sometime then decay occurs, not when constantly piling on the merits like I have been doing.

Nope, merit decay happens at the end of every cycle. In the end that means - aim for a rank you can realisitcally sustain in the long term, taking your avaiable time and ingame ressources (money) into consideration. Pushing only makes sense in case you want to push from 3 to 4 to get the faction related equipment, for example.

For me it seems correct, currently just keeping rating 2 for bounty bonus on Zachary and I went from 150 merits to 75 when it ticked over so i did some trade intel to get back to 100 so next tick if it drops to 75 I'll be happy

No of course not, I know I need to make 10000 merits weekly, which I have been doing but I thought decay only occurred if you stopped playing the game for sometime,

Understandable, but after first week, I received only, 1000 credits reward for 11000+ merits which took a lot of work in four days to do, and it stated I must make another 10000 merits this week to be rank 5, but two days before the end of week two I lost almost 7000 merits, so do I still need to get another 10000 merits ? even though I still have just over 10000 merits,

I don't know for sure if I got the numbers right but assuming you want to get 10000 merrits at the end of each week as I understand you need to get:
W1: 10000 Merrits
W2: 10000 Merrits - 5000 Merrits (W1*0.5) = 5000 Merrits
W3: 10000 Merrits - 5000 Merrits (W2*0.5) - 2500 Merrits (W1*0.5*0.5) = 2500
W4: 10000 Merrits - 5000 Merrits (W3*0.5) - 2500 Merrits (W2*0.5*0.5) - 1250 Merrits (W1*0.5*0.5*0.5) = 1250

I believe you are thinking of reputation decay... where , when you are logged off, over a long period of time, your rep with minor factions is supposed to 'normalise'. ie if you are allied it goes back to friendly. Having said that, I think after feedback, FDev parked that idea for the time being.

Okay I get it,
Week 1 you lose 50% to Decay
week 2 you lose 25% to Decay
week 3 you lose 12.5% to Decay
week 4 you lose 6.25% to Decay,

So week 1 I needed 15,000 to make rating five,
week2 I need 12,500 merits to be level 5 Rating,
week 3 = 11,250 required,
week 4 = 10,625 merits to be Rating 5 in faction,

Okay Thanks everyone for your replies you have been very helpful, I now understand this new decay system in place, Thanks again everyone

Real problem is that game deducts merits first and only then is applying rank. Therefore if you have, for example 10 000 merits and are eligible for rank 5 you won't get it because^
a) Game will substract merits from the previous periods
b) Viola, you aren't eligible

Pretty much happened to me with rank 4. Probably this is a bug and game should add rank first and then substract merits so you could actually farm more merits and maintain rank.

Yes you are right I was getting the two mixed up, thx

well for my 1st week I got 1500 merits. At the end of the period I have 1500 and 1000cr bonus. So does the decay only start the 2nd week?
