Lost a bit of confidence in this game

Firing in canada as they lost tax breaks going with that office, all of those jobs are being rehired in london. Net loss 0 staff they might even end up with a few more instead

Well, this killed my confidence a bit

Not sure why it would - the loss of jobs is unfortunate but the article doesn't say for which project they were working on. You would expect that some of them were transferred to another department / game and the rest let go.

Standard practise of todays empires - downsize, consolidate, growth ...

Not the only, and by far not the first nor the last company - every single company in existence does something along those lines if they need to. Some fire folks in hundreds at once, to hire replacements elsewhere.

Layoffs mean financial trouble. Most of the time due to next quarterly outlooks, to avoid taking a loss. Either way it is NEVER a good thing financially and always signifies financial issues somewhere. But companies will sugar coat that truth with to the public. I been at companies that did layoffs in the hundreds, usually due to a failed project or one that didn't sell as well as predicted.

A 15-man out of country sub-studio got re-jigged for tax reasons. Sounds pretty good financially to move your tiniest operation when taxes don't go the way you want. Hardly a company-wide collapse.

i think what you are missing is context: this comes in the same week as they announced a new roller coaster game, the last one they did sold 10 million copies so things are by no means looking bad. they are also still hiring in the UK where tax breaks for the games industry are more favorable.

consider this:

[to qualify for tax breaks] Projects must pass a cultural test. Points are awarded for the amount of development undertaken in the UK, the fact that certain job roles are carried out by UK staff and whether at least half the game's overall team are from the UK.

given that they get a 25% break for doing so its no wonder FDev are scaling down operations in Canada and hiring in the UK, it makes good financial sense to do so and as such its business as usual rather than doom and gloom.

They wouldn't be working on a tycoon game if they didn't need the cash. It's an easy thing to milk to get some money in the door.

My confidence was shaken by the state of the game, not this article. This game should have had another 6-12 in the oven before being released.

its a business, making money is kind of the whole point.

In business terms it's called "diversification". Any company that doesn't soon dies.

This thread should be called " The March of the Alarmists"
