Do you loss all astronomical data if you die? Just started playing and was mapping every system with joy. Accidentally crashed into the station by pressing the wrong button. After getting a new ship I notice all the system I've map are now unexplored. Is there a way to preserve the system map(i.e. the system maps won't be lost after dying)? Or it's just the game design to do this as a death penalty?

Yes, because its stored in your ships computer, which is lost when your ship is destroyed. you also loose bounties you havent cashed in and fail missions for which you might have been carry cargo, or which fails upon ship destruction. If you fail a mission, you might also be fined, so its worth checking that before you undock again.

Wait what? You lose system map data when you die? So exploring each and every thing in a system is erased?
If you haven't visited a station and turned them in, yes, the information is lost and you cannot earn any money from it. As far as the actual information in the map I don't know. It's possible that the absolute worst could have happened i.e. map is updated but you lose any chance of benefiting from it. If that is the case it begs the question: Where is this galactic map stored if it's not on your ship? If the info was lost with the ship then the map should reset too, surely!?
When you say system map and explore, do you mean with the discovery scanner? If yes, then selling the data Universal Cartographics, the bottom option on the bulletin boards, should prevent you from having to rescan if you die the better quality scanner you have the more money you can make. However you have to sell the data at leat 20 Lyrs from where it was scanned.
Yes everything is gone, not just the data on the ship for you to sale, but also the ACTUAL map. I fully maped 10 systems and now they are all unexplored
Yes with discovery scanner. Planet details and all that good stuff.
So just to recap:Let's say I explored system A, B and C. If I turn them in 20 LY away then die afterwards, I will still be able to see system A, B and C full details on those maps.
But if I scan everything in system A, B and C, then get kill by pirates before turning them in, all three systems will remain unexplored as soon as I reenter the game. Am I correct?
Thats my understanding of it yes, however first thing i did was remove my scanner and fit a fuel scoop, so i havent actually experienced any of this myself.
