Well, not lost exactly, but I am having problems navigating the galaxy map.

I'm trying my hand at exploring - not got very far as yet as RL got in the way - but I'm not at all sure how to get "out there" I'm trying to get out to unexplored regions, but I suspect there's every chance I'm just going round in circles. I'm aware that the galaxy is a BIG place, and it's going to take a lot of jumps before I go where no man has been before - I'm quite happy to put in the time (hours, days - weeks?) to achieve this, but I'm struggling to understand the way the galaxy map works.

One way I guess would be to choose a star that's well out and head for that - but I'm reluctant to ask for suggestions for such a star as that means it's not likely to have been unvisited - unless some kind soul would choose one at random for me. I did intend to head for the California nebula, but I can't find a way to select a star in or near it.

This is I think a difficult question to help with, I only hope someone else has experienced the same problem and found a solution they can pass on - either that or recommend a good tutorial for understanding the galaxy map and how to navigate around it?

Use the bubble as your reference. On the 4th tab of the left-side panel in the galaxy map you can see the Power-play spheres of influence (or at least you can turn them on, not sure now). Zoom out and you will get a very good idea where you are. Just head away from it. It's probably not ideal to go to the center of the galaxy, it's the most explored uninhabited area of the galaxy ;)

There is a limit to the distance you can use the route plotter for and that's possibly affecting your ability to select a distant star. If trying to reach the California Nebula say, suggest using the Coordinate Grid to navigate (make sure it's turned on in options, right tab in the galaxy map).

I was in the same situation not long ago as i also just started my exploration career and trust me don't over think it, choose a point of interest and bookmark it. You can go to Google and find something interesting; like a star - and when you find one (ie - rigel, aldebaran, mx orionis etc etc) search for it using the Search function in the galactic map. Zoom out to get an idea of it's direction. It will surely be more than 1000 LY away and to get to that star or point of interest your headed for plot routes that are less than 1000 LY away from your starting location to your target's general direction. You can start by plotting maybe 200-300 LY routes at first and then do longer ones as you go along exploring.

Make sure you have everything you need though, like fuel tanks, fuel scoops, discovery scanners (advanced at least) and detailed surface scanners (scanning surfaces doubles the payout).

To navigate, use your AWSD, QE, RF keys and mouse. It just takes some time to familiarize yourself with the galactic map but im sure with a bit of practice and time you'll soon be clicking away on star systems.

Also, the chances of finding undiscovered systems within 1000Ly of the bubble is slim to none, you'd have to go out there to start finding undiscovered systems (i started finding undiscovered systems 2000LY and beyond in the direction i headed). There is still that chance that nearby systems are undiscovered, after all there 100B systems out there!

Lastly, the farthest that ive been out is about 5000LY, there are others that have more than 20000++LY away, a major undertaking that i have to condition myself before i take :D

So I'm relatively new to the game and all I did was look at an angle on my home system on the Galaxy Map (I done a 70 degree angle so I was heading out but also a little up), then moved along til I found a system roughly 500LY out, then routed to there (using Fastest), then once I got there, I done the same again (headed away from my starter system) and used Economical Route to start scanning, found plenty of undiscovered systems out there, or planets in systems where only the star had been scanned.

have a look at the galactic coordinates in the galaxy map. 0/0/0 is sol. 0/-1000/0 is 1000 ly below sol etc.

look up your controls in the control scheme, you can move a long any of those directions, with or without zooming out.

the route plotter can plot 1000 ly. california nebula might be permit restricted for new content (not sure about that, but it should tell you if).

handy: put up a bookmark for your <1000 ly waypoint. and name it 001 xxx ... the next time you get into the game, you can easily replot your course.
