Lost Keybindings related to Windows update?

I lost my keybindings again for my HOTAS, or maybe it is more appropriate to say ED could not find them as they are clearly there in the bindings folder, but not visible in ED. This has happened numerous times and I think I have discovered a pattern, but not sure. The last 2 times ED could not find my bindings, I noticed that it was after a round of Windows updates pushed through and now I wonder if that has always been the case?

Here is the exact scenario. Updates are downloaded. I usually wait until I am ready to shut down the computer and choose "Shutdown and install updates". Next time I start up the computer to play ED, fire up ED and the default keyboard and mouse bindings are there and HOTAS is nowhere to be found.

For me what works is to then to go into the bindings and choose "Custom", exit out of ED and restart my computer. Go back into Elite and then I can see my HOTAS bindings again to select them. I have tried just exiting out of ED after choosing Custom and then going back in, but that does not seem to work, I actually need to restart my computer.

Anyone else notice a pattern with Windows updates causing issues with keybindings not being visible?

I lose them from time to time but not spotted a clear pattern. I look out for this trend you have mentioned from now on. I always keep a couple of back-ups because this is a massive pain. It is also a bit frustrating that keybindings with a controller included (I use mine for my SRV everything else in on HOTAS and keys), can't be used if the controller is off even if I have no plans to use my SRV that day.

The only time I have seen this sort of behaviour is when one of the devices is not found/plugged in. Such as when you might have a wireless XBox controller for SRV not turned on etc. Since 3.0.x approx, if a device is not found on startup, the associated bindings are hidden from selection.

Don't think it would be the Windows updates as such, but would probably try plugging in your devices into different USB ports/hub and ensure everything is found/active in Windows before starting the game.

YES! This exact thing happened to me today. Last thing I did was to update Windows and shutdown after playing ED. This morning, straight after boot I ran ED and there is no HOTAS to be found. I've saved my bindings but it's a pain to keep loading them.

Was your USB driver updated by the update? Does the game SEE your HOTAS? The game usually reverts to KB+M defaults when you start it with the HOTAS unplugged (I do it by accident, sometimes).
In any case, it's a good idea to keep the Options folder backed up somewhere safe every time you update either the ggame or Windows.

Another thing that may have happend that the administrator rights were changed and Windows is preventing the game to access and read files in AppData. Try running the launcher as administrator through the right-click context menu, maybe?

After the 19.37 GB (update?, which took 5+ hours to download) on xbone it reset the bindings on my hotas only on my alt acc. That was the least of my problems however. So not sure it's P.C. specific.

Bindings management is a royal pain.

If your bindings are there, but not showing up in elite have a look at the bindings errors log (in the bindings folder).

If one of your devices isn’t seen by the game, you basically have to start from scratch.

The error log won’t tell you which device it can’t find.
But it will report a device ID number.

Frontier could actually do a QOL pass on bindings, but I don’t expect they will.

My guess is the updates must affect the USB hub or drivers causing the issues. I have seen several other posters in other threads asking about unplugged devices, but that does not apply to my situation. I have a dedicated rig for ED, so everything stays plugged in. I do check the error log and it is usually logging that it cannot see something after the update (pedals, stick or throttle), even though all are plugged in, no changes whatsoever.

If you read my original post, it was fairly painless to get them back once I figured out the pattern and then the fix. Takes a restart, but that is a lot easier than the alternative.
