Love for the Cobra Mk4!

Anyone else here have a love for the CM4?

It gets a lot of bad press, but for me, i find it be a great ship for piracy. I think it would make a decent low cost mining ship as well.

I'm sure people can point to a dozen other ships to show why ship X is better for Y. But in the price range i'd say for Piracy there are not many competitors. The DBS doesn't have the internals, the Type 6 just lacks maneuverability and combat ability.

The two closest contenders are the Viper Mk 4 and the Cobra Mk3. Both decent candidates. The VM4 sacrifices some internals for a bit more robustness. The CM3 has a little less internals but more utility slots and better speed.

But for me, its the number of internals (8) that is the winner. Plenty of space for cargo, collectors, hatch breakers, and still room left over for the luxury of a docking computer.

If i was the sort of person who wrote lengthy posts to FD demanding they change some aspect of a ship, the only thing i'd really want is 4 utility mounts. After a cargo scanner and chaff launcher, there is no room for point defense or anything else.

But considering that my targets here are traders, and possibly small escort ships, i'm fine with this. Its not like i'm pirating medical convoys with their pythons and anaconda escorts. I'd only consider that sort of monkey business in a wing of 4.

As for weapon hardpoints. 2 pulse lasers are fine for getting shields down. I've loaded up the 3 small slots with missiles. If they try and run, then blow their thrusters with the missiles. 2.1 now stops ships jumping if thrusters are offline.

And finally, the thing that made me really fall in love with it the most. The model and texture. Have you looked at one closely? the texture is like that of a snake, with the midnight black paintjob, it feels and looks like a pirate ship.

So, anyone else love the CM4? And if so, what do you use it for?

I was thinking of getting one as a dedicated materials collector with wake scanner, collectors, SRV bay and reasonable cargo. Cheap as chips as well. Also, 1 3C tank puts the laden range at about 130LY which is enough for any standard mission.

I do indeed love the Cobra IV, but after spending months in one I have to say its speed is a flaw that overshadows the rest of its awesomeness. It's just too slow to survive combat, and that was before the 2.1 AI buff. The Viper IV is slightly more robust yes, but its higher speed and fractionally higher turning rate (and those thrusters, whoa) make it a much, much better combat ship.

The other problem I found was in getting the power plant to feed all those modules and the extra gun. Four utility mounts would be great, but it'd just put more weight on the generator. You could make a patchwork of lower-grade modules I guess, as well as use power management, but that would just diminish the spaceframe's potential next to ships which can be fully A-rated.

I love my Cobra IV, but under that lovely hull are far too many compromises and the engine of a Robin Reliant. If only it hadn't been exclusive, maybe it wouldn't have been gimped quite so bad. The spectre of P2W hangs too heavily over it I fear [sad]

Other than that, if you want a small ship to do anything other than combat and don't mind the glacial turning circle and tendency to drift, the Cobra IV can do almost anything and still have room for more - so there is that :p

I use it as a dedicated non-combat mission ship, but it desperately needs engine mods. As it is it's even slower than a Keelback!

Not even considered this when the faster CM3 is cheaper and faster. How does its fsd fare next to the CM4 if it could jump farther I'd consider a second look.

Can't even find out if it's coming to Xbox. Brett replied but wouldn't even say yes or no. Why the secrecy? Is it that rubbish? :D

I had mine for only 20min, then sold it. It's too slow and has less agility than a python. Don't understand why, since it's a small ship. I prefer fast, nimble ships. The Diamondback scout is one of my favourites, but sadly it's very limited in internal modules.

If it'd had the large hardpoint we were told it was going to have in the early notes we had on it, then I'd throw more love at the Cobra Mk IV. Sadly, I find an Adder's got more character, and a Mk III just a better ship full stop.

Well, it ALMOST have the same amount of internal space as an Asp so it had to sacrifice something to squeeze in that ungodly amount of internal modules. It's the poor mans exploration ship that could fit basically anything for (slow) exploration, SRV, scoop, scanners and some guns.

The CIV seems to get very little out of its engines - upgrading them hardly increases the speed and only moderately increases its maneuvering from "terrible" to "slightly less terrible". It's like the ship itself is made of depleted uranium, but it's only 30 tons heavier than the CIII? :S I'm all for giving it a drawback, but perhaps not quite as bad as that.

How does the Cobra Mk IV behave with some dirty drives engine tuning? I currently lack the materials, but enhancing this ship is on my mid-term TODO list. I do have a Python as multi-role mission/mining ship, but the Cobra Mk IV looks somewhat interesting as well for this task, especially for its price. And I like its planetary flight model a lot, so it might make a great planetary missions ship.

With the new AI (I love it, not complaining) I don't know if I want to fly the Cobra Mk IV unmodded. It just cannot get away and the shields are not exactly strong. I don't want it as a combat vessel, but I want to have a chance running away when attacked.

Would be interesting to know this. Not sure ill be making friends with Engineers any time soon, too many other things i'm doing. Since i'm using it as a pirate vessel not bothered by the AI. Will run from combat ships, kill traders. I have other ships for direct combat.

If I had the materials needed for a dirty drive engine tunning mod I wouldn't be using it on a Cobra MKIV :) Most of the values are in %, and we start from a very low speed, so the % will be very low. I think the best way to use the mods is to upgrade the best characteristics of a ship, instead of trying to balance it. I could be wrong, of course.
I love the Cobra MKIII, and I think the MKIV version needs some serious changes from FD. Specially now with the new AI... even a "Mostly Harmless" enemy would easily run circles around a MKIV, and with that speed there's no chance to run away.
