LOVE the sound design!

Whoever you guys have doing the audio design, give that man raise!

Stations especially... Every *chunk* *clackclackclack* in dock, airy/echoy audio announcements. Undocking an L6 Freighter with all the heavy dock noise and the computer telling you the ship is released over the din sounds sounds so great.

Toggling systems of/on, all the bleeps/blips, combat, alerts, witchspace, station rotation, the engine noises... the ENGINES! Just amazing immersion all around.

The latest thing that blew me away was the in-game voice chat. If you guys haven't heard it, just hail some random person to try it out.

Yes, if they don't get awards next year for this I'll be quite surprised!

Here are interviews with two of them. :)

Jim Croft (Head of Audio)
Jose Castro (Sound Designer)

The incredible engine sounds really blow me away. I can't imagine how tricky it must be to give the ships such distinct 'personalities'.

I get on every one of these threads just to thank the audio team. The sounds are truly incredible. I especially like the engine sounds, you really feel like you have thousands upon thousands of horse power under the hood.

The only niggle I have is the fleeting "pröööt" sound right at the moment when you enter hyperspace. It feels slightly out of place and too loud compared to the other sounds at that moment.

Agreed, the audio is just excellent. I didn't even expect the engine sound to really change between ships but it totally does and is part of the reason I want to upgrade to another so I can hear them all.

Yes. If there would be Oscrar for the best game audio I would give it to them for sure :)

The quality of the sound is amazing and you are right especially inside stations.

It'd be hard to get a set of sounds everyone likes, I think they've done a very good job considering the variety in tastes. I for one love the jump in/out sound. I think it *should* be a jarring event to enter/exit witchspace.

Edit: Now that I think about it... didn't Star Trek (reboot) use the same type of horn-like "pröööt"? To the Google! http://youtu.be/lYp-2EvnwXw 12:17 & 12:50 I like the Elite one better actually, kinda similar though.

12:17 and 12:50 timestamps in a 3-minute clip :S

Yes, love the audio in the game. So much attention to detail. It's incredibly immersive and sounds great on my 5.1 speaker set up.

Though I've had to turn the subwoofer down as my girlfriend was complaining about it in the next room (especially when charging the frameshift drive) :)

I think special kudos must be given to the sound design of stations. The speakers, the music, but most of all, the ambient station sounds. I'm not sure how much they differ between the stations, but they just sound amazing. Equipment moving around, rumbling noise from the factory halls, the muffled sounds of the docking chamber from inside the hangar...

I absolutely agree, the sound design is nothing short of amazing.

And indeed, the voice comm is just brilliant with the statics and whistles, and the little bleeps when the channel closes. Fantastic! I just hope to see that voice comm doesn't break down when you're separated from the player you've been talking to, so you'll get to enjoy the experience even more.

I also absolutely love the game's audio, especially the sound effects. Elite's world feels so very much and truly alive because of it. Unfortunately I don't have 5.1 hooked up to my computer, but I can concur that 2.0 with a nice subwoofer does the job very, very nicely as well. :)

George Lucas once mentioned that sound and music are 50% of the entertainment in a movie - I can see this apply to games as well. Well done indeed.

I'm not sure how many times it is duplicated elsewhere so far (I haven't noticed any others like it) but the sound in Romanek's Folly (Morgor) is particularly nice.

Sound is incredible, graphics incredible, whole game incredible, a dream come true for me and i am sure for others also. :)

Agreed. Love the sound! I loved the sound of the Hauler when I had it.. while maneuvering it sounded like someone de-tuning a banjo :D
