Loving it so far. My thoughts

Elite on the C64 blew my mind as a kid. It was the first persistent game that I played. The dogfights were the most visceral of any game at the time.

I never got into the Elite sequels. I didn't like the overly blue color scheme and the dogfights while more realistic of what fighting in space would be like were not as fun.

This game however has the potential to be everything I could have dreamed as a child playing the original. The great dogfights are back. The sound design is amazing. These ships sound like something out of Star Wars as the various thrusters fire as they are maneuvered. I love seeing the blocky style of the original ships rendered in high fidelity.

I'm taking it slow so far (can only play around and hour a day). Sold my eagle and have stuck to trading in the sidewinder. Have close to 60k credits so am considering an upgrade. I haven't died yet and want to see how long I can make that last. I'm avoiding combat for now.

My biggest complaint at the moment is the pricing deltas of expensive cargo. The game would be better if filling the cargo slots with the most expensive cargo (a huge risk) could make much more money than cheaper cargo. From what I have seen this isn't the case so I never risk it. Sticking with cargo missions or moderately priced cargo is the way to go for now.

I'm excited to see how this game improves over time. The foundation is there for something special.

+1 from another old fart.

It's interesting how it seems many of the old Elite players have taken this new iteration in their stride, where as some of the younger players are disgruntled with the mechanics, the lack of content, the lack of multiplayer features, the slow pace, <insert other twitch gamer grumble here>.

+1 to the old school!

I said on another thread I cant think of any game that could get people who played it 30+ years ago to come back and play again. I barely play games these days (a bit of Minecraft with my 4 year old daughter!) but im going to go buy a spanky new PC just for this game.

At last a post that isn't someone whining after spending only a few hours in the game, and deciding the game sucks because it isn't holding their hand. Sorry, but those posts have been grating on my nerves recently.

I agree entirely with you. Have a rep. Though I always shed a (metaphorical) tear when I hear someone sold their Eagle for a sidewinder. I love that ship, it's become my fav little bounty hunter.

Yep, +1 from another old C64 player.

I've only gotten a half dozen hours into ED so far but to be honest I'm loving the hell out of it! I find myself thinking about the game even when I'm not playing. I haven't died yet either though I did have to turn tail and run twice already, I was just overmatched. Been mostly trading and pirate hunting in my Freagle with 8T cargo space. Tonight I plan to buy an Adder and really start trading hardcore to work my way up to an Asp.

ED has delivered better than I expected so far. It really does feel like the good old C64 game in a beautiful modern shell.

I did enjoy the eagle the few times I flew it. My reason for selling was that I was going to trade and 40k seemed too good to pass up in helping that. Knowing what I know now, (how missions work and the lack of profit from buying 4 tons of 10k cargo) I might not have done the same thing.

One point I forgot to make above. One thing about Elite that to me always made it better than most other space flight sims is the flight model. Rolling and using pitch to get on target is much better than yaw and pitch flight models of many other games like Wing Commander. It makes the flying much more like an aircraft sim (which was my other love in gaming).

I'm wishing I could be playing right now. :) If I get a hauler, will more profitable trading missions open up? I need to make money faster if I'm going to get back in the MkIII where I belong!

That's a point of frustration with me. I didn't play the original back in 84 but I played the sequels in the 90's. I don't think new players realize that the devs are trying to hold true to the old games. I for one am having a blast with ED.

Yes a hauler is a good stepping stone to the Cobra, and opens up 12t missions and the like.
I'm absolutely delighted with the game as it is, and the potential is just epic. As someone on this forum said the other day, I'm happy as a Slinky on an escalator! :)

Another old school C64 player here, also love it. I got a friend who bought it too and I accompanied him to Dalton Gateway to pick up his Eagle. Players themselves can make content by interacting. That's my main hope for the future, that they increase player interactive options as then content starts to build itself in the form of player alliances etc.

A remake of The Lords of Midnight would also get me as well.

I think us oldsters just are enjoying what the game is. Yep I look forward to the updates and expansions but at the end of the day I spent half my teenage years playing the original so this is a walk in the palk. I'm loving it...

Yep. Me too :)

Played on the Acorn Electron and agree with the sentiment above. Most impressive is how my 16 yr old son enjoys the game too. He is the archetypal PS4 gamer, but has been sat on my PC all weekend working away at ED. Might be time for a second PC :)

Another 'class of 84', and I love it. Only had 2 days in game so far but what a rush;
Day 1: did the first combat scenarios several times each up to sidewinder head to head then the same with docking and travel. I felt ready to venture out in my sidewinder.
Starting in LHS3447, I spent a couple of hours doing data delivery missions, a little buying and selling and just getting a feel for things.
I was just relaxing in SC when I experienced my first interdiction; I paniced! It took all of 5 secs to pull me out of SC. I held my own but made no progress until another ship joined in, and then a third! I made the kill shot and got 9k cr.
Day 2 was another few hours doing short jumps back and forth, making a few cr. I successfully avoided 2 interdictions, sold my freagle and upgraded my fsd ready to venture further from home.

Simply brilliant!
