Loving the Viper MkIV

Thanks again ED team for fixing the black paintjob issue. I love this ship. It's mean, a nice long jump range and it snarls! It's the ultimate boy racer ship, I feel like I should buy the vibrant paint pack and give it 'boy racer yellow'!

Isn't that boost sound fantastic? My favorite part of that ship, the internals and jump range are very nice as well.

I've been meaning to ask about the Viper MkIV - other than the paint job, sound FX and jump range (all very nice) how does it perform in combat??

It says it has a maneuverability rating of 4 which kind of put me off though I know those scores are misleading. How does it handle, what are the thrusters like, do you need to A grade everything etc...

Need more info :)

My new favorite ship, all rounder, the best explorer inside the bubble, ready for battle, too and for everything :)

Not used one in (serious) combat. For blasting round canyons in horizons though, man, for a "cheap" ship it's amazing.

It is inferior to the Cobra mk III in every way, except subjective things like design and sounds. Inferior internals, inferior speed, inferior maneuverability, inferior jump range, and equal utility slots and hardpoints. Only better things are shields and armor, which are irrelevant when you can't maneuver properly.

I want to love the MkIV because it is the coolest ship in the game (IMHO), but it is a straight downgrade from the Cobra III which we had since day 1, and it's more expensive which means you won't even buy one on your way to a Cobra.

If you have ANY practical reason to fly the Viper mkIV rather than the Cobra mkIII, please tell me.

I have not flown her yet, but I think the design of that machine is absolutely stunning.
I am in love with her lines.

I would love it if we could get a bigger, more multifunctional, sister of the Viper IV with approximately that same design... Perhaps the size of an Asp.
I would love a bigger ship that looked like that. As far as I am concerned it is the best looking ship in the game.

All 4 hard points are useful in combat and have a convergence! ;)

Seriously though OP ignore the manoeuvrability rating, it claims the python is a as manoeuvrable as a FAS (and this is why it will go to hell for lying!). Pitch speed is poor (though not much worse than the Viper Mk3), the bid strength is the thrusters and the acceleration, lateral thrust is excellent and you can stay behind stuff all day long. Keep in the blue use FA of and love the fact that it can really soak damage for a ship this size.

I Use this as a "cheep" all rounder as I never really fell in love with the cobra

Mileage may vary, the author accepts no responsibility for flying it into the ground, never drink and fly.

Way back when, I always remembered the Cobra as the Ford Escort of the skies, as I think it was describes in earlier Elites. And that's really what it's felt like since, it can run far and fast and can take a knock or two without feeling special. The Viper MkIV just feels better than the Cobra MkIII. I've flown a lot of ships in the game and I'm trying more and more of them out now that I've reached a point in the game where I can buy and kit out some of the new smaller ships. And they're great. I don't think it's about which ship is generally better, it's about what you like to fly. I've had a Clipper as my main ship for a while now and I think the Viper MkIV is like the baby equivalent of a Python, which I also like for some reasons, but it is pretty slow and cumbersome, here we have a smaller, nippier, fighter version of it.
Heavier shields and armour feel good in this ship, it's like when you fly a Vulture for the first time and you feel quite tough - but only if you pick the right fights!
Or you could decide to just 'nip' to Maia, for example, fully armed and ready to do any missions...

I loved my Viper MkIII... still have one in storage. I wish the MkIV had been really a substantial upgrade... something closer to the Vulture in lethal - except with more speed and grace.

But sadly, no. :(

I should have thought that's exactly when they would be the most relevant.

I see your point, I didn't express myself correctly. What I meant was rather that the mkIV's better defense doesn't make up for its lower maneuverability in combat compared to the Cobra mkIII. It will tank damage longer but it will be irrelevant since in the end you won't win the fight because you couldn't keep your guns on the Cobra.

Yep, Its like they took the numbers from the mk3 cobra, made them worse in almost every way, spent a day modding the current viper mk3 model, and called it a day. There is nothing special about this ship. Infact i find the hardpoints to be at a distinct disadvantage over the cobra mk3, as the turning speed means you'll be spinning in place almost exclusively, and the medium hardpoints are on the bottom, unable to track as well as the cobra mk3 in a turn.

(Sarcasm engaged)

Everyone wanted a Viper/Cobra that was in several ways worse than the Mk3 versions. Because balance. ;)

Ahh. Now I see, said the blind man.

To me the Viper Mk IV has felt like a poor man's Vulture. I loved flying round in that thing in the beta. It looks and sounds awesome, and it can hold its own in a fight.

:D S

The Viper Mk IV's lateral thrusters are insane. It's also a solid ship for ground based activities (again due to strong thrusters).

It's boost speed isn't bad at all; indeed it sounds like a very angry horde of robotic bees during boost and grumbles like an old man (drinking scotch and complaining about how the old days were better) when maneuvering. And pretty much any NPC that picks a fight isn't likely to live the mistake down; hull isn't bad and takes a bit of a beating for it's size.

It's not a bad little ship to tool around in, frankly. Very handy for a bit of quick ranking in short range high/ medium influence missions (unlike cobra, you don't necessarily have to boost and scoot in every encounter). I've been splitting time between it and Asp lately, even though I have technically better ships in the stable, in order to gain imperial navy rank.

Turning speed really doesn't matter if you know how to use thrusters and FA off, and unless you are flying something bigger, like Python and up.

A lot of this sort of comments seems to stem from the lack of experience in using FA offs.

Viper MkIV is an excellent smaller combat ship once you get better at FA off turns. Cobra Mk III won't be as good (mainly for the fact that the hardpoint placements are terrible for mounting fixed fire only weaps such as PACs).
