My friends and I are getting some strange low fps issues I. The RES on The cg system. It's really weird that my 1080 ti cannot cope with a bunch of asteroids. Is this a bug or something like a memory leak?

Its more likely to be just the shear number of people there than a memory leak. You'll get it quite a lot in busy systems, it's less of an issue on solo or a (relatively) quiet private group.
FWIW: an 1080 should be able to run the game on high at 1080p and 2x supersampling with zero issues in any location. So something else is up.
