Low resolution textures on planets?

Just wondering why the planets in ED look so bad and low resolution?

For example:


It seems all other aspects of the game including stars look pretty good. Why are the planets lacking? Even the old x3 games look far better:



Then of course there is SC which looks amazing (but expecting ED to look this good might be asking a bit much... just posting for comparison sake):

Strange, x3 planet resolutions are good but I feel that ED beats them hands down - I would check the graphics settings within ED to be sure a setting is at a less than favorable setting.

Doubt anyone cares to see pics of SC as a comparison. And there is further content in development such as landing on the surface of planets and stuff so. I imagine there will be graphical updates as time goes on. This of course depending on how successful ED is and how well the first round of paid DLC goes i think.

I'd say they are quite good at the moment from what I have seen, very clean looking. Granted it's all distance work, and Space Engine has the terrain crown right at the moment.

I couldn't compare with X3 or SC as I haven't played them.

I've just played the SC free flight demo, the Earth-like planet is incredible in its detail. To be honest, from what little I've seen, it makes ED look terrible. Time will tell if they can pull it off.

They look better since recent patches too and will probably be changed in the future.

Also you can change their map size to improve on them even further. (Changing the sizes to 4096 in the options file..its not well documented though)

Thanks for posting that. Wanted to try game without spending and now I am downloading. Already more impressed as I DL ED patches about 100kb/s and I am getting my full 50 Mb with SC.

Those pictures look ok, but if you look at other planets, like ringed planets they look horribly low resolution. Even X3 looks far better and its nearly 10 years old.

Do you mean the rings? Just because a planet is ringed doesn't mean that it renders in a different way.
I think there was some LOD problems with rings.
