Low Temperature Hen's Teeth

So these Low Temperature Diamonds...

Since there was a new patch etc I thought I would have another go at mining this elusive commodity to see if the "drop rate" has increased or changed at all.

The results...are not encouraging...

System: Delkar (Pristine reserves)

125 Prospector Limpets (roughly 120 Asteroids searched/prospected)

I spent half the time/limpets at one ringed body then went to another for the rest.

Result: 74% of 1 ton of Low Temperature Diamonds

.....74% of 1 Ton...in 120 asteroids!!!!! :O

-------------------------------------------------------

So what is the deal here? I wonder what is the point of them. Ok, I get that there is no rule that says some commodities cannot be very very rare. But in that case, one would expect them to be worth a lot of Credits (Like 1/2 mil per ton). Or maybe have them be part of a Community Goal (I don't think they ever have been?), or some other game play reason. Other wise what use are they to anyone. I guess there doesn't have to be any use or reason, but in the context of a game then, what's the point? Perhaps FD have some plan for them in the future?

Or perhaps these Low Temperature Diamonds can be found in high quantities some places? But as with a lot of things in Elite that I cant figure out, would this high quantity be because you happened upon the right "Roll of the Dice"/ Instance. Or are there actual logical ways to find areas that have a high yield? For example; We can tell (to some degree) if a Metal type ring has a high yield by the System Map telling us it is "Pristine" and "Metallic". But all Ice rings are just labelled "Icy". I notice Ice rings have different coloured rings. Does this have any bearing on Yield? The colours are White and Blue.

These sort of questions are not very easy to answer in Elite. You can't tell if its worth trying to figure these things out or if it's all just based on the roll of a dice. Even with normal mining I feel this. Eg, Are all Pristine Metallic Rings the same and it's just down to a dice roll that determines what the yield will be like when you start mining....or could it be possible to find a particular system/certain body/part of a ring that has a better yield than other Pristine Metallic? I have no Idea....for the length of time I have played I would say it is just random, dice roll based. The same could be said for Planets resources and POI's and RES zones....But who knows?

But, anyway.... Low Temperature Hens Tee....I mean Diamonds [big grin]... What do you think?

Forget mining, go steal steal them instead, much more fun and less time consumeing when you know where to look;)

Which raises the question of where the hell are the npcs getting them from?

Good point :)

I too have seen NPC's with them. I saw a ship (Keelback I think) flying over my head while I was on a planet surface. Gave him a quick cargo scan and he had 40 LTD onboard! I may have a go at some Piracy again soon, see how many I can get.
