Low wake drop-out

When I used to do assassination missions, I used to find the bad guy in supercruise and follow him until he low-waked, then target his low wake, approach it like any POI until I got the "safe disengage" message to drop-out, and there he would be. I was playing in open today and targeting many low-wakes, but not "safe disengage". It said I needed a wake scanner, but I never had one when I did it previously. Has something changed or am I doing something wrong? I know I'm going to kick myself on this one!

You definitely don't need the scanner to be able to drop into low wakes from SC. You only need them to be able to follow high wakes from normal space to another system.
That being said, it does happen occasionally that the ship "auto-slowdown" doesn't work properly when approaching the low wake, so maybe you were just too fast.

Hmmm! They were definitely low wakes and I tried approaching at every speed. Many times I had the distance down to less than 100km at zero throttle, but I never got the blue safe disengage. I'll try and get a video tonight.

I've sometimes had this on approach to Haz Res sites. Did you try dropping anyway to see if you ended up in the right place?

I'd try that.

Or can you confirm that for some reason you hadn't deselected the low wake target???

I went around in circles, targeting and untargeting, coming in from different distances, but nothing seemed to work. I got messages to say that I needed a wake scanner, but they were low-wakes!

There are actually TWO WAYS to do these.

One is to use the Interdiction method like you all are doing.

But there is another faster way...

Each of these missions give you a planet or star location where to find the target.(Scan the Nav Beacon with Discovery Scanner on arrival)

If you go there and fly around that area for a bit, staying close to the target body, you will eventually get a "Mission Critical" USS pop up. This will be in BLUE and Yellow Text and display TARGET with the Threat Level of the enemy inside that USS.

Drop into that as you normally would and your bad guy will be waiting for you in there.

Watch your speed and distance indicators instead. Drop when they're both in the color band and you'll be good.

I say color band, because I use a custom HUD color, so yours may be different from mine. For me, it's a dull gold color.

This strongly reminds me of a problem I experienced back in Jan. 2015

Unfortunately I had no idea how to reproduce it, nor do I know if it was ever fixed. I haven't experienced it since.

Well that is weird. I'd put in a ticket for that.

I think it's something to do with double targeting. I need to do some more tests. I think it happens when you have a station targeted and then you target the low-wake. The low-wake is in your target panel, but there's still a large ring at the station's location as if it's still targeted.
