Lucrative Mining? (Painite Prices)

I came back to ED after being away for about 6 months or so, and the last thing I remember doing was mining Painite. Back then it went for almost 1 mil, and now I see the price has dropped to about 300k. Anyway, my question is this: is there better stuff to laser mine than Painite? I enjoy mining, but it would be more worth my time if I was making a little more money doing it.

Thanks in advance!

It all depends. Prices are now dictated by demand in different systems. Best way to check is using inara.cz or eddb to see what materials are going for the highest prices in which systems.

Just make sure you check to see how old the data is. Granted, I haven't spent a lot of time laser mining in EDO, but when I've had minerals, the pricing on EDDB has been way off.

I was told Platinum is where it's at. It's around the same price, but it appears to be easier to find those better prices. I did a few runs on Painite, Platinum and Osmium (a bonus) and Painite has proven the most tricky to sell at reliably good prices.

Edit: mining in general seems to take longer than I remember...

Sorry, can't stop myself being flabbergasted how ridiculously high those commodities pay nowadays!
Last time I sold Painite, it was about 60k. And Platinum was about 18k.

Point of info, the Fusang system is currently offering very good if not peak prices on all kinds of metal and minerals. The plus side is a single station there buys at good prices with high demand, so no system-hopping to offload various products. I turned my out-in-the-black mining produce into around a billion creds in the last couple days. Platinum was very well situated there as I recall. The drawback for some is that the better prices were all for core-mining products, although as I recall Silver was listed in Inara with a gold value (far above Galactic Average).

Lots of traffic there may change Demand, however, so the boom may not last.

Serendibite, rhodplumsite and monazite are all found in cores in metallic rings and all go for higher prices than painite.

Don't pass over osmium and samarium in metallic rings either. Both can be handed in for very well paid mining missions. I find most osmium in subsurface deposits.

Yeah, not really into the core mining stuff. Seems a bit less relaxing than laser mining. But anyway, I checked out platinum and osmium on Inara, and they seem to be doing worse than painite.

Like others have said: whenever you see Osmium (and to a lesser extent, Palladium) be sure to collect them, as well!

The price for Platinum fluctuates, but if a faction you're allied with offers a mission for Osmium, get it: it pays around 357,000cr per tonne.

I believe the money per hour meta is currently platinum, which sells for around 300k/ton. If you core mine, rocky rings seem best now, just any core really (Musgravite or Monazite are probably best but its marginal). Prices from around 600k/ton to 8-900k/ton in the right circumstances. Void Opals are still good (about 600-900K again), but the other cores in Icy rings are now largely junk for core mining, including low temp diamonds.

Personally, I don't waste my time with Painite anymore. Finding a station with acceptable prices is too much of a hassle to be worth my (limited) time. I think I still have a few hundred tons left onboad my FC that are gathering dust. When I mine, I usually go for Platinum. The prizes are much more stable and reliable. It's certainly not as profitable as the good old Void Opal and LTD days, but at least it's something.

It's a shame, really, considering how much cooler core mining or sub-surface mining is compared to the point-and-hold-click laser mining 🤷‍♂️

If you want to mine with a focus on credits/hr, mine platinum as it wasn't ruined by station demand / bulk trading nerfs. Use a mapped laser mining route, can find them on plebbit's mining sub or make your own. If you want to mine non-stop you'll need several maps as it takes a while for the respawns. The time spent dumping your load is a huge factor in overall efficiency (which no one ever counts, so beware of people telling you how many credits/hr you can make), so if you don't have your own fleet carrier, just sell to one of the rent-seeking carriers that infest popular mining systems. If you do have your own carrier or you're a one & done miner, support Zemina Torval in powerplay for a +20% buff to the sell price and aim for 320k-340k when you go sell.
