I have never been convinced by the arguments that we need to go to the moon to get to Mars or to other places in our solar systems. To me adding a two or 3 phase approach to a missing to mars is going to be adding a tonne of expense to such a mission, with little to no payload improvement. We can test equipment an hardware on probes to Mars an other astronomical bodies, no need for a big, an rather expensive lunar gateway station to do that.
Not that I don't want a moon base I just think that if a moon base is established it will spend the next century at least using their resources to survive and expand their colony on the moon to become self sufficient not launching missions to mars or jupiter or anywhere else.
As for science funding, I'm just happy that so far the republicans and democrats have manage to work together in congress to block the cuts and even increase funding for some projects. Which is sad in some respects because it means science funding is so low on their list of priorities they can't even be bothered to fight about it.
