Hi everyone,

We have been made aware of a problem with the download of the Mac version of Elite (1984) that went out yesterday. The package was missing a few key ingredients!
We have now addressed this issue so if you have already downloaded it, all you need to do is download it again and everything should be there!

Regards,

Laurie

I got the C64 tape version 30 years ago. I can remember what a joy it was to open the package. It was not just a tape with a thin manual but really a complete package, even with a SF novel 'The Dark Wheel'. It was outstanding. Too bad I lost the box over the years.

I completely missed out on the last 30 years of Elite, right up until getting into the ED beta. I just took a quick look at this (after finding the manual online so I had some idea of what keys to use), and think I will enjoy flying around in it at least a bit, mostly to get an understanding of where so much of what I am not experiencing in ED originally sprang from, and to remember what computer games were like back then when I was just starting with them. Thanks for sharing the history!

I get the following message

You can’t open the application “BeebEm414.exe” because Microsoft Windows applications are not supported on OS.X.

please can you advise what I should do thanks in advance

Make sure you've downloaded the Mac version. The Mac version I downloaded had a BeebEM ".app" application, not a ".exe" application. (It didn't have an Elite .ssd file, but I think that has been fixed now.)

Best rating in < 2 hours

Is anyone playing this? Does anyone remember back when this first came out there was a contest to see who could get the best rating in < 2 hours? I don't remember how they administered that, but somehow the best got invited to a final competition in the UK. I never made it that far, but I remember I managed to get a 'Competent' rating once, just barely under 2 hours.... beyond that I think would be impossible.

So for anyone that is playing this now, take 2 hours tonight and see how far you can get :)

I'd also be interested to know who won that competition back in the 80's... I can't find a single mention of in on the inter webs, but am sure it existed! I'd love to hear how that went as there was no Internet then and I had no way of hearing the final results. David Braben must remember.....
