Hello, its me again.
I was bored and after seing some demand for more lemurs in other threads i thought to myself "hmm why not take a look and see if madagascar could do for a good pack" and the fact that your seeing it here tells you that yes, i probably think so.
I personally prefer 4+1 packs with pieces, but im unsure what the theme for Madagascar would be, so feel free to leave suggestions, because im sure they have something interesting, as they have a culture mixed from elements of african, southeastasian and colonial influences, but i couldnt find any pictures of something distinctly "Madagascar" that wernt clean nature shots, even though i bet that pack would have great foliage.
For the first Animals i picked the greater dwarf lemur, about the size of a meercat, these small tree climbing lemurs are very common in the shrublands and forests of the eastcoast of madagascar.
As far as i found they arnt to common in captivity, but are held in atleast Zurich with plans to slowly spread them to other european zoos.
Outside of madagascar houses or as a small habitat in another bigger house, they would thrive in nocturnal houses, being a great way to introduce some more animals for creating them.
Funfact time! These little buggers are pollinators and serve an important role in the madagascarn ecosystem. Also they store fat in their tails, thus their german name "brown fattail lemur".
Eupleridae is the family that inhabits all of madagascars endemic carnivores and with in them are besides some mongoose also more elegant creatures, that evolved into more cat like shapes.
This is a Fanaloka, also known as the Malagasy civet, a small foxlike creature that hunts by night on the east cost coast of madagascar.
Most people only know lemurs and maybe fossas from madagascar, but this creature would be a nice, educational pick while giving us a civetlike, small tropical mammal and another great pick for nocturnal houses.
And another funfact! Only very recently (for scientific history that is) it was found out, that the Fanaloka isnt a Viverridae as it was thought, but that all of madagascan carnivores are related, leading to their new classification.
I bet you ask yourself what that is, huh?
This is a giant coua, a ground dwelling oo native to Madagascar.
They reach a size of around 60 cm (30 cm smaller then a female peafowl) and have a rather similar lifestyle to the african secretary bird, walking around in search for prey, even though they dont kick their prey and rather peck at them, hit and runstyle similar to a mongoose, jumping quickly around their victim. They might be able to fly, but prefer not do unless provoked by immediate danger.
They even rather climb trees then fly up and hunt airborn prey by jumping of the wood and gliding down.
Reasons for why they should or atleast could be in planet zoo are simple, they are a small grounddwelling bird and would be usefull for aviary style exhibits, especally if one with actually flying birds drops, as they are mostly lived in by some airborne and some grounddwelling birds, something we are sorely lacking at this point.
But on the otherhand i would bat no eye on anyone who would prefer another lemur over them, or any thing else really. I might think they are cool and would bring something diffrent to the game, but i can also see alot of people atleast at first not liking them if they would actually drop in a dlc.
And lastly the one you all have been waiting for, the fossa.
What shall i say, its the biggest carnivore of the island and one of the more well known animals, having evolved a similar stature to a cat or a marten, but still having the loveable yet frighteningface of a mongoose. A great and iconic animal allround and i really hope we see them in the game.
For practical use, they would again be great animals for nocturnal houses, as they dont have a fixed sleepcicle and just do their thing whenever they want, as well as being another aboreal marten- or catlike predator, allowing for fun exhibits and creative climbing frames.
Another no brainer would be the exhibit animal, the malagasy giant chamelon.
Its a chameleon and its giant, what else to say?
Honrable/Animal pack mentions:
I might like normal packs more, but because i neither have a theme in mind, fun doing this and only one new lemur in the pack im gonna give some three extra mentions (who new that madagascar of all places is where i would like to get an animal pack from duh. Madagascar will have more animals then europe, oceania, australia and tie with south america without exhibits, how odd but fun this world can be)
But first another non lemur!
This is the malagasy giant (jumping) rat, the largest endemic rodent of the island and severly threatend.
Right now their is an extensive breeding program for them in zoos, especally in the Us, making them one of the more commonly held species from madagascar and in my eyes deserving of a spot.
In the wild they are only left in one forest, so the breeding programm and its so far success will make or break the future of this charming little critter.
Another funfact is that they are monogamous, which doesnt help their conservative efforts but is still really cute!
They are an completly nocturnal species and are a burrowing species, both of which could lend them a nice niche in planet zoo
But now for an actual lemure, the Conquerel's Sifaka.
As far as i have seen the secound most requested animal from Madagascar in these forums and with a good reason.
They are not also big and pretty, but also can be kept in captivity, other then their larger cousin the Indri.
Its a pretty, leafeating, big white lemure, that rounds out all 3 big lemur groups and i think that alone couvers why he should be in the game.
Lastly, the crowned lemur, one of the more commonly held lemurs.
I actually wanted to pick the red bellied maki, but i think they look to similar to the red vari on a distance.
The most outstanding thing about them is their gender specific colors, with the females being way more gray then the males.
This place is a stand in for any other true lemur, as i feel like most of them that are common in captivity would have a got opportunity for this spot, but are to boring to come in a 4+1 pack, as we allready have two true lemurs in the game.
So thats it, i hoped you liked my list and learned something about some of the less known madagascan species.
Ofcourse this is wishfull thinking and i dont think this, especally as an animal pack would be needed, but it certanly would be nice to have frontier revisit madagascar.
Personally i would like to see the 4 animals in the 4+1 pack far more then the other 3, but i think the logical choice for appeal would be to swap out the cuco or maybe even the fanaloka for the conquerels sifaka. Another quite funthing is, that this could easily double down as a nocturnal house pack or atleast a nice supplement to one.
I hoped you like it and tell me what madagascan animals you would like to see!
Im allways up for a fun discussion and to learn about cool new animals
