Mag boots?

So i guess frontier have said that magnetic boots will allow walking around in starports in odessey. The concept seems hilarious to imagine. Will people be able to walk up walls and walk on the ceiling? Can you jump? Can you jump from one wall to the other wall? And if you are functionally weightless, can you carry a ton ? I can just imagine someone getting shot with a kinetic weapon and bending over like a blade of grass and then standing back up because their feet stayed attached.

the mag boots will only be in the small space outposts, so there will not be any combat there as it will be a social space. the big starports wont need the mag boots cause the spin

EDIT: Unless maybe for specific scenarios that we don't know of yet (like damaged outpost, outpost gets raided etc). But thats just speculation

Allow for some suspension of belief. This is still a literal video game and it does have its limitations.

As for carrying stuff, mate, we have a bag that can carry thousands of materials in the space of nothing.

Elite Dangerous is not a hardcore simulation, and never has been.

No madness??? Not even in a cut throat galaxy where pirates fly 100 million credit FDLs and complain about their children going hungry because you weren't hauling any biowaste? In a society where the penalty for loitering is death? In an age where disgruntled passengers eject themselves into the void 40,000 LYR from home? Where the sky rains skimmers of doom when you try to land with a load of food? Madness is what I have come to expect and thrive on gaddamnit! Give me madness in my escape from RL madness!!!

The weight of a peice of paper can carry a ton; it just starts out a bit slow.
weight and mass are different things.
weight is force of pushing of mass to "ground"
mass is measure of inertion.

So 0G means mass will not push to "ground" just it. But to move it or stop u still need to apply force enough to beat inertion.
if 1t moves with speed 1 m/s I don't think you want to stop it by hands - it will crack all ur bones.

Which is why the weight of a piece of paper is enough to move a ton; it just stats out a bit slow...

By the sound of it though, you might be confusing friction with inertia.

The piece of paper has no “weight” in 0G either ...

Yeh, except there is no weight there. You should produce such a force with your finger. Yes it will move. Maybe. If it will be bigger then friction of air. Couple hours or days later.

Fair point, but I'm assuming the same force as the weight of a piece of paper here on Earth, you know, like some space probes and stuff with ion thrust and whatnot.

Not unless there's a wind blowing on it or something. At rest there is no air friction. A ton can be moved fairly easily in 0G by a person. The difficulty comes from guiding it around correctly.

Cheers.

I guess, in theory, you could ball up said piece of paper and lob it at the “floating” 1T object ... some of the inertial energy from the moving paper ball would be transferred to the 1T object (unless you miss - can you get gimballed paper balls?!) and some would be transformed into heat due to the friction of the impact. If you threw it hard enough then maybe the 1T would start to almost imperceptibly move.

Exactly how hard you would have to throw the paper I don’t know (there was a time when I probably could have worked it out but nowadays I, frankly, can neither remember nor be bothered ...)

One things for sure, if you weren’t mag-booted to the ground then the act of hurling the paper that hard would send you flying backwards and, likely, send you into a forward rotational spin around your centre-of-gravity until some other force acts on you to stop that.

Like smacking into a wall or being thrown out by the station police for messing about with physics experiments.

If you’ve watched The Expanse, you’d know how disturbing people can look when shot dead while magbooted to the deck.

Also, in one of the new episodes two characters walk down a corridor and pass someone coming the other way - who is walking on the “roof” 😁 I’d like EDO to feature cool little things like that so it can stand apart from other first-person games, but maybe we’ll have to wait for a proper zero-G expansion.
