Mahon pledged pilot's word of caution for Exploration GC

So after parking my trusty brick „Thusnelda“ at Tsu I was honored with an invitation to officially join the ranks of the Alliance of Idenpendend Systems.
I did some runs for Edmund Mahon and shopping some much needed equipment for my shiny new ASP „Brünhild“. But then, I could not resist the call of the great black void any longer and headed for Goldstein Port at Lembava.
I was very suprised to find myself to be marked as a hostile. Me, a humble explorer hostile, when Sirius Corporation needs all pilot's to get the required data? That's beyond me.

Almost out ouf fuel (no fuel scoop, wanted to purchase it at Goldstein) and with a very small 200 Credit Bounty placed on me I was stuck at Lembava. I decided to leave the system but I had to refuel. Wanting to avoid more troubles with Sirius Corp, I headed for Morrison Dock.
Bad move, bad indeed. Morrison Dock neither has a refuel facility, nor you can pay off your fines or bounties. So it's limping back to Goldstein Port.
I finally managed to sneak in using Silent Running mode and a high speed fly-in.

To make a long story short:
If you want to take part in the exploration GC, don't pledge yourself to a power (or only to Li Young-Rui). If you are pleged to another power, prepare for lot's of interdictions butnever shoot back. I did with the first Sirius security vessel that attacked me and got a 200 Credit bounty.

I'd advise you not to sell your data to help Sirius Corp at the possible expense of the Alliance. ^^

I mean, Sirius would be my second or third choice, and I strongly considered doing this CG, but having pledged to the Alliance I really can't. :)

kind of a bonehead thing to do in my opinion.
They finally give us a really good exploration CG and then went and locked it off to a bunch of players who wanted to play the last little bit of content we were given with PP who chose incorrectly with no way of knowing beforehand.

This is why I am still not participating in PP

Agreed 100%

Unless our exploration data gets used for some practical purpose by our chosen faction (like expanding into new territory) in such a way as we can participate, then what's the point of PP for explorers?

I have no interest whatsoever in the petty squabbles of mankind back in The Bubble. I moved amongst the various political entities in ways that drew no alarm from them...and offered no loyalty from me. In ways that profited ME. I have been outside The Bubble for weeks and will be for the foreseeable future. I'll return eventually to sell my data to UC...I may even run my rare trade route a few times in my trusty Cobra...but then it will be back into the black for me.

I am a natural born trader/explorer/merchant. I am fiercely independent and plan to remain so.

I've finally ventured up into Alliance territory last night for, I think, the first time since I've been playing.

My Asp is parked in an Empire patronage system so I'm not gonna Power Play pledge anything and have to fight my way back to my main ship. I noticed there's this new "brother can you spare a dime?" mission in the bulletin boards that just asks for a few thousand credits or so for whatever particular cause. I've given to them whenever I see them but I don't know what it's gaining game-wise except maybe some good karma somewhere.

This CG is over at the end of the month, right? I'll have probably ventured off again by then and will likely be lucky to get back by the end of the following month. Or the month after that. I hope there is always an active explorer CG going. If not no biggie -- I'm happy just tucking into the nearest outpost coming in. But if participating in the CG helps the exploration facet of the game as far as the development team goes, I'm on-board with that, too.

I knew that I would be passing through Federation and Alliance space as well as the space exploited by 3 different Powers on my circuitous path to Lembava.
That's EXACTLY why I didn't pledge to any power, because I knew it would cause nothing but trouble for me.

Sell a few pages of data off to systems where you can pick up a permit (78 Ursae Majoris to get the Alioth Permit for example), THEN head to Lembava to sell the rest.
The CG is currently up to Tier 5, which gives 7.5MCr to the top 5% band. A few days ago it was about 700-750 system reports to get to that band.

I think they made the mistake of assuming all explorers would go with Li Yong-Rui for the profit bonus. Which in my mind shows they clearly have no grasp of why most people are explorers. :p

making all other powers your enemies by pledging to one other is pretty stupid anyway. its just as if you join a political party and every one of another party gets a tag "sworn enemy, free to kill"... pretty unrealistic

I moved all my ships to Lembava, because I wanted to try PP and do exploration CG at the same time without these problems. But I got bored of PP pretty quickly and then just left, so I could do trading CG also.

Thanks for the information.

Came back for 1.3 and leaving again because of Powerplay (Night of the long knifes). Powerplay = Power gamer.

Me I'm a mercenary so will stay independent, as I see no faction supporting goals I am interested in supporting.

My plan is to make the final 10kly back before the end of the CG, sell all my data at Lembava, then sign up for PP for a bit of something different. When I'm heading out to the black I'll resign from my chosen faction (not defect) and go exploring, knowing that I'm not going to get embroiled in PP hostility. Ah, but what about all the merits I'll have accumulated? Well I believe they erode at 50% per week, so after a 4-6 week exploration there would hardly be any left anyway.

Well, from a pure gameplay point of view not pledging or leaving a fraction is a very valid way. Perhaps that's the best any sensible non-combat pilot can do.
I see it from a more roleplaying/background story point, so I will stay with the alliance even if heading out of the bubble.
Perhaps the system needs more balancing e.g. getting only hostile with an other power if you activly attack them. Especially a corporation based power should not randomly attack pilots, after all they want to sell their goods.

It's worth reminding people that once you've pledged to a faction you are in essence a Privateer:

A privateer (sometimes called corsair or buccaneer) was a private person or ship authorized by a government by letters of marque to attack foreign vessels during wartime. Privateering was a way of mobilizing armed ships and sailors without having vessels be commissioned into regular service as warships.

When you run as a privateer you are an 'enemy' of or at the very least a danger to the other factions; you've accepted a letter of marque so you get the benefits (money) from doing so. Actions and consequences....

Us unaligned explorer types are the innocent merchantmen plying the trade lanes or distant lands, occasionally getting caught in the crossfire.

Yo ho ho and a bottle of Rum-ulan ale :)

I have delivered exploring data 3 times at Lembava the last two days.

Only once did I get interdicted by NPC and outboosted easily from that encounter.
