Mailslot nav' lights?

Just wondering if anybody else has noticed how vague and poorly-defined the interior red/green mailsot lights are?

Many gfx cards ago, I had an ATi Radeon card and, with that, the mailslot nav' lights looked fine; there was a well-defined bright red/green rectangle(IIRC) as the light-source and then a bright red/green glow around them.

Since then, like almost everybody else on the planet, I've moved over to NVidia cards (780, 980, 1080ti and currently a 3080ti) and, although I'm perfectly happy with them in most respects, none of them have managed to render the mailslot nav' lights properly, like my last Radeon card did.
The mailslot lights just appear as a vague red/green glow on either side of the mailslot, with no obvious light-source at all, and in brightly lit stations you often can't really see them at all.

I know it's not just me because it's something I look out for when I'm watching ED gameplay video's on Youtube and I almost always see the same thing.
In fact, I've even noticed it while watching FDev's livestreams.

Just wondering if I'm the only one who's noticed, or whether I'm the only one bored enough to mention it... or maybe there are people out there with NVidia cards who have decent looking mailslot nav' lights?

I can't see them either and just take the path of least resistance. Try messing with the Bloom setting in graphics.

Most commanders have always ignored them, or were not even aware of them.
So the poor light's soul progressively died out in its lonesome loneliness...

Maybe FDdev could implement a system of fines when you enter/exit using the wrong side? ;-)

I think it was a year ago (could be wrong on the time) .. after a big update they were significantly dimmer than before. I just got used to knowing were to look so still pick them up pretty fast now.

Well, they certainly become a lot smaller to see if one turn off bloom, which is a pity IMHO, because I am not a fan of bloom.

Not so sure it's necessarily a NVidia/AMD thing; Rendering has changed a bunch of times over the years, and with Odyssey everything became so shiny, and the tonemapping so aggressive, that things frequently blow out to white, and then nothing can be discerned. 780 era would be quite a while ago, well before Odyssey, although I suppose OP did see the difference right away, when switching, back then...

Yes, it came as a graphical downside with one of the updates and I’m pretty sure it was Odyssey.

I’ve had NVidia cards for as long as I’ve been playing and used to be able to see the navigation lights perfectly, since (I think) Odyssey it’s been the same for everyone…a faint hint of a green/red glow, just enough to take a punt at choosing a side. As jojon says, it’s a far wider issue.

Yep. They could/should be brighter. Also the red & white lights on the back and front of coriolis stations could use some more brightness too.

That's interesting.

I probably could figure out exactly when I swapped from AMD to NVidia, and first had this issue, because it coincided with a time when all the lighting got very "contrasty" to the point where it was, literally, impossible for me to play the game.... which I moaned about on the forums.
At a guess, I'd say it was sometime around when Beyond started, or possibly a bit before.

I wonder if, perhaps, the reason I noticed it back then was because my old Radeon card wasn't as clever so it displayed the lights in some of "default" manner, whereas the Nividia cards I had after it could have replicated that if I'd twiddled the game settings... until we got to a point where FDev changed the lighting again and removed whatever made the lights more obvious?

Main thing that bugs me is that I can always see a vague red/green glow either side of the mailslot but there's just no obvious light-source.

Also, FWIW, I mention this now cos I'm currently doing a bunch of cargo hauling for the CG and the autopilot on my Cutter keeps giving way to oncoming vessels, thus I'm spending a lot of time staring at the sides of the mailslot. 🫤
