Main Menu Frozen

Hi all

Just bought ED today, it was the primary reason I've just spent a load of dosh on a new pc and rift. Tried to play it, and it lets me choose a Commander name, then progresses me into the hangar with the surface vehicle in front of me. I can look around fine, and the music plays on, but the main menu is completely frozen. No amount of keyboard, mouse or gamepad input affects it. I've come out, powered down and re-booted a few times, each time with the same result. I'm on Windows 10, with an i7 6070, 16gb and a GXX1080. All other games have run flawlessly. This is the first piece of software to be problematic. The game was purchased through the Oculus store.

Any ideas anyone? I've posted in the bugs sub-forum, but am not sure how often the dust gets blown off down there.

Cheers :)

I assume you are running the latest drivers for the Vive and GPU. That your machine is virus / malware free and patched fully.

1) Shut down your PC completely. Unplug it, removing the battery as well if it's a laptop.

2) While powered down unplug all cables to your Vive breakout box and unplug the Vive from the USB plug. Wait at least a minute. Plug everything back in.

3) Fire the PC back up, turn on Steam VR and see if you get a "Ready" prompt. If you do, fire up Elite and give it a try.

If it locks up while playing Elite, your graphics settings may be set incorrectly. Do 1 - 3 again, but when at the Elite main menu, go into Graphics settings and change to VR Low. See if the game boots. If it does, nudge up your settings one or two at a time (while you are docked so you don't risk losing your ship inbetween).

I had the same issue and it was caused by me over driving the GPU.

EDProfiler may help as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MAbt76ct7s

Hi

Thanks for replying. It's a rift, rather than a Vive, and bought through the Oculus store, so no steam in the equation. I did let ED auto-configure the gfx options at startup, based on my spec, but I'll have a try at lowering them and see if it makes much difference. Mind you, I am running a GTX1080, so will be a bit miffed if it's insufficient, as it's the most powerful card out there.

All drivers are up to date

Cheers :)

The only time, the main menu freezes is, when i take off the Rift and just look at the screen. It does not take any inputs then, but it works, when i cover the HMDs sensor between the two lenses with my finger. You may try this to be assured, that your Rift works correctly.

Hi Frank

I'll give it a try. HMD was mounted when the problem occurred. Although, since then I've been able to play and the menus have been behaving themselves. Most odd. I'm about to undertake mapping my HOTAS later so, hopefully, it will be nice and stable. Does the Thrustmaster T Flight automatically pick up a default profile, or am I at square one with it?

Cheers

I had what sounds like the same issue once. It was caused by me clicking outside of the desktop Elite game window (i.e.: the little mirrored view you get when the game runs, not the HMD display). Clicking back into that window fixed the problem. It seems that ED ignores any input (keyboard, joystick, mouse) if that mirror window loses focus.

Thanks RichTF. I think you could well be right. For some reason, my control does seem to get outside of the HMD and stray across the desktop occasionally. Not sure how, or why it happens though. It's even worse with DCS. I'm having a constant battle to stay in charge of the menus in there too.

Not sure on that one. It's not a fancy, gaming mouse, just a 2-button+scroll wheel, working off windows 10 drivers. I also tried a Kensington trackball thing, and that performed identically, ie same problems.
