So this is the story of how I got the "Main tank drained" warning.
Over time I get lazy. Flying an Anaconda with good shields and weapons and nice room for cargo - there is nothing much to fear. So on my last trading trip I was in my standard routine:
Enter station, sell 400t cargo, buy the same 400 t cargo I always buy, enter destination station (3 jumps), lift off, fly out of station, boost to jump point, FSD counts down …
I think: "Wait, I've forgotten something. Light at home is turned off. Payed the last speeding ticket. Hmmm. OH *@'*%§! fuel, this Anaconda needs fuel and the tank is already down to something below 1/2 …"
Ship computer: "FSD engage"
"Nooooooo…"
I find myself at a sun. A quick glance at the fuel gauge tells me enough fuel for the next jump. I won't make it to the destination. The system I'm in only has outposts. Not enough fuel to jump back. I have enough for the next system.
Next system. Almost empty tank. No way I could reach my destination without additional fuel. Just outposts in this system.
I have to do it.
Fuel scooping with a fully loaded Anaconda and a glorious A1 fuel scoop.
Flying an orbit around a sun with an Anaconda is surprisingly not as easy as in a Diamondback Explorer. People complaining about that A4 fuel scoop of the DBX? Try an A1 fuel scoop. It takes forever and a day to get some fuel into the tank of an Anaconda with such a tiny scoop.
After what felt like an eternity circling that sun, always looking if any of the ships gets to interested in me. I decide to jump to the final system.
Exactly after the jump the ship declares "Main tank drained". I docked with 49% reserve.
Just yesterday I thought I could change that silly small fuel scoop back to a 2t rack or a D-scanner. Glad I didn't.
Morale of the story:
Never fly without insurance. Never fly without enough fuel. A A1 fuel scoop might save you from having to pay for insurance or from calling for help.
