Maintaining Military Ranks and demotions

Was wonder what could be a good mechanic in the game, if thats the right term  for maintaining and possibly losing rank in the military

Maybe we will need to perform a certain number of missions over a period of time to maintain our ranks or perhaps get demoted if we fail missions.

Missions and ranks need a lot more features full stop. Back in Elite 2, you could be demoted. You also needed to do a lot more than one specific ranking mission to get promoted. Another thing was that one to got to the higher ranks, doing easy delivery missions etc. earned you no advancement at all, you had to be doing the photo missions/ assassinations to keep progressing. None of this 3 grain? Thanks baron! nonsense.

Basically, the current system feels like a placeholder. If it wasn't for the fact it will allow me to own a clipper once I have the cash, I'd almost rather they hadn't bothered until it can be done properly.

On the other hand, it sounds like an opportunity to rank up while we can, before the rules toughen up as development progresses. I suppose it depends on your point of view.

I myself have only done 1 job for the Federation so far. Too busy earning a living trading. Perhaps it's worth a look at again.

I do get the feeling the progression missions are a long way from fleshed out at the moment - probably more as a consequence of the general mission selection itself being limited.

I'm up to Lieutenant in the federal navy and the only vaguely challenging mission I've had was to blow up a dropship about 4 ranks ago. Every other mission has been to fly and deliver information in a neighbouring system, apart from one which was to supply some weapons (which were easily found 3 hops away). I suspect if the missions themselves get overhauled, that would be the time to get excited about possibilities with navy missions and funky things like required missions before demotions etc.

I don't like the fact we can rank up in more than one faction. Getting reputation is fine it would be in a pilots interest to stay friendly with as many factions as possible but ranking up in military terms should bar you from ranking up in a potentially enemy faction. The ranking system could stand a bit more depth though.

In the real military, if you aren't promoted within a certain time period, you're forced to retire.

Spent a large portion of my life in the military, the only time I have seen this is when you are too old for the post you hold or role you are expected to perform. Officers are slightly different due to the role they play but rank and file are not forced to rank up...not when I was in anyway

I assumed the ranks in elite are officers since Federation ranks use naval officer names.

I was gonna make a post about something related to this but then this one popped up.

I recently did two empire military rank missions (that i accepted at the about the same time from different stations) and got to 'Master' but after completing a second mission I am now back to 'Squire'. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a bug?

We're not a real part of the military, though. We don't have superiors ordering us around. Think of it as honorary ranks.

Of course, Empire and Federation ranks should be mutually exclusive, but as long as the Fed Dropship is the worst ship in the game you shouldn't exclude players from the Clipper.

To me that just cries "daily quests", something i loath with a passion, sorry.

Those missions would have to be pretty damn interesting, otherwise it just becomes a chore.

Just keeping your Rank seems fine to me, however they could improve the missions that allow to gain that rank, they're just generic crap which makes the whole thing feel hollow. I went from none to Baron and felt zero sense of accomplishment.

My dear boy, when one has Rank, one always has Rank. Demotions are for the non-commissioned men only.

I am firmly against any type of time based loss. If I do not play for a month, I want to return with everything concerning my reputation or rank exactly how I left it. I don't play games as a full time job, but to get away from such stresses. There are already ways of losing reputation. If your reputation takes a big enough tumble, I could understand losing rank in that manner.
