Make 0% paintwork mean 0%

Nice simple one this one.

I've just come back from a trip of around about 100,000Lys and my paintwork is (unsurprisingly) 0%. However it doesn't look like 0%. Sure the decals have burnt off and some of the nameplate has too, though you can still see the name, but the vast majority of the paintwork is still there. Make it strip back to the metal, I want it to look like I've been through the wringer!

I agree with Ozric that his paint could (and probably should) look a lot worse at 0%

But I also agree with varonica that 0% (i.e. no paint left) would just look un-painted.

Which is best ..... FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!

LOL, sorry, went Harry Hill for second there. I suggest "make 0% paintwork mean 1%". :D

"Back then" the ships really lost a lot of paint over time, leaving them with almost completely blank metal at the front and much worn off left overs closer to the back. Looked really cool. I would very much prefer the old wear and tear looks.

I would like paint limpets so I can keep my Orca looking new (100%) on these deep-space expeditions. My passengers have very rich tastes! Either that or give me an EVA and I'll paint the hull myself.

I'm pretty happy with how it works currently, though I feel it could probably wear off a little more slowly.

However, as long as we can get paint limpets, then I'd be up for more significant wear. :)

Then it would just look like an unpainted ship, not something that's been through the wringer.

Spelling mistake corrected, cheers :p But we can't have unpainted ships in Elite, so the only way you could get it like that would be to strip it off yourself over time.

Yeah to be fair that's probably a better look than completely stripped. I can't even really remember why it was changed, but it definitely used to be a better system and give more meaning.

The problem with the current system is that I reckon my paintwork looked like that after I'd done about 20 Kylies! (obviously it is dependant on the amount of time you spend in Supercruise) I'd certainly be happier for a slower wear if it meant that you would actually get decent levels. I mean look at that picture, realistically how much of the paintwork has actually gone? 20% 30%?

As I said, the ability to turn off the effect, not to nerf it completely.

Personally, I find the idea that I can fly through the edge of a star without damage, but that the paint suffers wear and tear just from flying around, to be an absurdity.

The drive field for FSD would HAVE to protect the ship from particle blasting or the first time you encountered a 1mm piece of carbon, you'd have a kinetic energy event that would be visible anywhere in the system.

All that said, I am not asking for, "my way or not at all", just for a switch to disable the effect.

[big grin] i agree! i wanna see burns, and chemical-stains, and blood!

dust! grit!

unemployed robo cleaners, having a strike at the entrance/exit of orbiter-ports, or on the pads at platforms!

well, everything except the last one.

OMG. Nerf paint wear. For real?

(Devs add paint wear nerf to list)

I'd really like to see broken panels hanging off, sooty scorch marks, frayed cables flopping about, coolant and lubricant leaks...
I want my T9 and Cutter to look absolutely wrecked.

And the traffic controllers to be all:
'What the... How's that scow still flying?

I'd like a slight modification to your idea. IMO, shields should protect us from "space dust" just like they protect us from bullets and low-speed scrapes against asteroids. If you're flying without shields, however, then paint should wear. I'd like to also see our glass clearness tied to either paint wear or hull integrity. When paint is fresh, our windows should be as clear as my new car. Only as the "dust" wears at the glass should it fill with all those scratches we see.

BTW, I often turn off shields while exploring, until it's time to land somewhere, in order to stay cool. If I wanted my pretty Orca to stay pretty, then flying with shields would be a requirement, based on my aforementioned idea.

I understand the proposal, but, when you are traveling at multiple of light speed, particle impact would do more than just "sand blast" the paint work. Even at a the low volume, as shown in the Interstellar Medium article, "as low as 10−4 ions per cm3", you couldn't use an FSD to go anywhere at a speed greater than C without some way to prevent those impacts. Presumably, the drive field serves that purpose.

Just in case you weren't aware, but flying without shields causes your ship integrity to plummet. You'll be at 0% before you realise it, won't obviously make much difference on a long exploration journey regardless.

There should be a little paintwork slider to increase and decrease paint wear, though the OP post of his ship looks awesome and good amount of wear I wouldn't see the point in 0% as like mentioned it would be bare metal and like new ship.

Give us control once we have earned it like 0% not unlike ranking once we get to 0% we can use a slider to control how distressed our ship looks, this goes for external damage, would be nice to have the option to have scars on our ships only if we would like them, something like the avatar system but for ships.

Avatar system for ships. :) let us choose how our ship looks , paint wear, scars damage etc.

+1 vote for there being a damage pattern that follows the direction of travel

Bare metal at the front, glossy new paint still intact on the trailing edges and a wear pattern that makes sense :)

Pretty sure that my ships manage to get shot up pretty much all over. So I'm happy with procedural paint wear.
