For anyone who doesn't know (somehow) the "Pip-Boy" app is a gimmick app that talks to a copy of Fallout 4. It can do inventory management and a couple other things, like the ingame module on the wrist of your character.
I think that concept could work REALLY well with ED. The Nav Panel and Systems Panel especially are already practically touchscreen interfaces! Perhaps the role panel as well. Comms, less so. Have it connect wireless (and maybe USB?), and have multiple apps talk to one system.
For non-users: Nothing changes.
For VR: Nothing here either, really. I guess.
For light users (my likely usage): I could put the Nav Contacts on my phone next to the screen, and see all nearby contacts while doing other stuff, or on the map screen. I could use it to set/re-set destinations to jump to. I could put the Systems Refinery up while mining, for easy venting of junk. All kinds of stuff! Maybe set up a small (cheap) tablet for it as well, as basic touch stuff shouldn't use much processing power, relative to 3d games.
For HOTAS users: This is where it could REALLY shine! Get a few cheap tablets, and build them into the gear! Have a Nav side, with one tablet or old sim-less phone for each possible window. On the other side, you have Systems panels. Just like ingame, except you just glance over and jab a button with your finger.
Imagine how COOL a setup like that could look, with 2-8 tablets wired in for power/USB, automatically coming up with the various windows, surrounding the screen(s) and HOTAS setup.
