Make a "Not-So-Exotic" pack

Just about everything is 'exotic' to me. Even our own native birds.

In terms of 'common' animals from an American or European perspective;

America
1. Striped skunk.
2. Common raccoon.
3. North American porcupine.
4. Red-eared slider.

Europe
1. Fallow deer.
2. European badger.
3. Red fox.
4. Wildcat.

European Wildcats would be so nice to have in the Game. But I don't think they'll be likely to make it into the Game ☹️
Maybe if the Europe Pack will be a Animal Pack or in some other DLC afterwards🤔 Maybe some small Carnivore Pack. Would also be perfect for Raccoons, Black footed Ferrets or another small Mustelid and some kind of Civet or a Skunk

Yes please! we need "common" animals to fill the zoo and feel more real. I the zoo I meet when you enter there is always a deer or a wild boar, not a Lion or a proboscis monkey.

Also they can have low requirements so they can fill small spaces and for the exotic person to no mind to much in this animals, but this ones are a base form a real zoo.

In the Animal park in my Home we have a Mixture of Domestic and Wild Animals. So we have Wild Boars, Pigs, Ponys, Red deers, Fallow deers, Ravens, Squirrels, Chipmunks, Donkeys, Turkeys, Ducks, Geese, Peafowls, Lynxes And few Goat breeds. To orientating them to a Pack we need maybe an European Pack and a Farm Pack

I want both of those so much. I love it to build Wildparks and at least some of those do also have Farm Animals. I'm so disappointed that we still only have one real Petting Zoo Animal so far. We should at least get a domesticated Goat

Animal Pack: I went with animals common in North American zoos that would help fill out the "smaller mammal" quotient in Planet Zoo for zoos in that area.
  1. North American river otter
  2. Striped skunk
  3. Red fox
  4. Raccoon
  5. Red-rumped agouti
  6. Cotton-top tamarin
  7. Axolotl (exhibit)
Scenery Pack: Similar theme as the initial pack with a focus on North America
  1. North American river otter
  2. Striped skunk
  3. Red fox
  4. Raccoon
  5. Axolotl (exhibit)
  6. Themed set: "Rustic" building set including a new log cabin and "colonial"-style building sets. Also includes new dead tree/log/branch pieces, new flexicolor "rustic" brick wall set/fence, new enrichment items (slide usable by otters and pinnipeds; additional water toys), new food items (smaller sized for smaller animals), temperate forest decals

I'd use this theme as an excuse to make a domesticated animals pack, as they tend to have generally "medicore" animals
  • Ankole-watusi
  • Chinese Goose
  • Anatolian Donkey
  • Domestic Guineafowl
  • Koi (Exhibit)
  • 170-250 building pieces
  • Timed Scenario

animal pack
  1. wild turkey
  2. north american porcupine
  3. Virginia opossum
  4. striped skunk
  5. common raccoon
  6. white tailed deer
  7. Canada goose
  8. common garter snake
scenery pack (american big city/concrete jungle theme)
  1. wild turkey
  2. north american porcupine
  3. white tailed deer
  4. Canada goose
  5. common garter snake

Well given that I'm from Montenegro my non-exotic pack would repeat a lot of other European folk here, smth like:

1. Red Fox
2. Wild Boar
3. Roe Deer
4. Wildcat
5. Ocellated Lizard (E)

So I tried to dodge some of more obvious choices and went with some flagship animals that you would probably see plastered all over tourist posters in our national parks. Of course after Brown Bears and Grey Wolves.

So non exotic Montenegro pack:

1. Balkan Chamois

2. Pine Marten

3. Dalmatian Pelican

4. Capercaillie

From a north of England perspective, and only including animals at least the size of the prairie dog which are not fully aquatic:
Red fox
European rabbit
Red deer
Harbour seal
Ring necked pheasant
Common buzzard
Barn or tawny owl
Mallard (the duck, not the locomotive, though as a loco dork and trained (get it) steam fireman I would love to take them for a spin in game too)

Not a fan of exhibits, but if I could have one full of brown lipped snails like I do IRL, I might change my mind.

The Mallard, the world's fastest steam engine. I'm trying to acquire a model for my collection, but they're too expensive to get a nice HO scaled running model.
I used to have mallards, as well. A client gave us an incubator and eggs she rescued from predators, and we hatched them, then gave them to a real farmer when they got a bit bigger

I tried to aqcuire the life sized version from NRM, but unfortunately they wouldn't fit up my shirt sigh

I once spent about 4 hours trying to find a place to take a duckling that was wandering in the road; sad I was the only one who bothered to stop. Ended up at the RSPCA in the end.

I'd really love to incubate some Eggs too someday🐣

Great 👍 I hope the Duck has a great Life now

Also, yes. We finally need Ducks in the Game. The Guests will get suspicious if there's just a Sign telling them that the Ducks at the Pond are currently being treated for Parasites and when they see the Sign there still after a few Years they'll figure out that I lied to them and the Zoo never had Ducks😂🦆

Your non exotic Montenegro pack includes the most endangered bird in the Iberian peninsula  😭

Yeah, isn't it interesting how it changes from country to country on the same continent. In one it's near non existent and in other it's common.

In Montenegro for example Eurasian Lynx is extinct, while you travel a bit north and suddenly it's everywhere.

I'm guessing you're talking about capercaillie ? They're common hunting trophy in what's left of our forests

Or as another example the red squirrel, which has already been mentioned in this thread because it is in fact very common, but in England is in dire situation.

Yes, capercaillie, there are 2 unique Iberian subspecies, one is a bit hopeless, endangered at Sumatran rhino level, and the other one is just barely better.

Oh really ? I never heard of Iberian Capercaillie subspecies, need to look it up. Guessing hunt got to them ? I do hope they stay around, Iberian peninsula has some very unique fauna compared to rest of Europe. How do they fair in captivity ? Any hope there ?

Not in any zoos, AFAIK. There are a couple of small captive breeding projects, but they haven't had so far enough success to release animals in the wild. It's really sad, I think they are really beautiful majestic birds, like the European version of the Indian peafowl.

Are there any wildlife preserves that protect them?
Yes, including a big National Park for the most endangered Cantabrian subspecies (and other 2 for the Pyrenees subspecies, which is not that bad). In fact, other endangered animals sharing those habitats, like the brown bear, are raising their populations at good pace. So it's not yet clear why it is not working with the capercaillie.

And now, to compensate for causing this bit of off-topic in your thread, I'll submit my Not So Exotic Animal Pack, with one very ordinary animal from each continent:

  • Striped skunk (North America)
  • White-nosed coati (Central America)
  • Collared peccary (South America)
  • Olive baboon (Africa)
  • Wild boar (Europe)
  • Indian leopard (Asia)
  • Black swan (Australia)
  • Mediterranean house gecko (exhibit animal)
