Make escape pods available on stations?

In certain cases, it's difficult to get back to civilization for commanders. Could escape pods be made available on stations like they are on megaships?

Escape pods take you back to the last station you were docked at, so you would end up the exact same place. Use the sidewinder suicide method to get back to civilisation fast!

If the station has no shipyard, you'll still be stuck.

Escape pods are not supposed to be fast travel - they are to make sure you don't get stuck.

Having said that with Colonisation there are now cases that could happen where someone in a short range hauler takes a lift on a FC to help outfit a new station in a system being Colonised - then the FC jumps out leaving them in a new station without a Shipyard and without the range to get anywhere (I guess they'd have to have a jump range < 15 Ly). In that case having escape pods would be useful.

But the OP didn't make that case - and IIRC no-one has been reporting getting in that situation - so they're probably just backseat-game-designing, as many on the forums like to do.

What I'd like to understand is what situation makes it difficult to get back to the bubble. I mean, distance can't be it because if you went out 50,000 ly, you know you're going to have to go back that far.

If it's an Anaconda's graveyard situation, you know what you're jumping into because you know what star you're jumping to next and a couple of unscoopables should have you checking your Galmap route anyway. Although the chances of being in that situation and having a station nearby seems impossibly remote.

Though in that specific case, they would have access to Apex and a guarantee of being able to use it to travel back to somewhere which did have a Shipyard.
I don't think Apex is available until the station goes active, so they might get stuck for a week. But this is a niche situation that people don't seem to be having, so maybe the OP has something else in mind 🤷‍♀️

When I've gone into stations that haven't fully deployed yet, there's still an NPC at the Apex counter, although I've never tried talking to them yet.

I would assume the presence of them and working docking bays means that this is functional though.

Hmm - when I've been to Outposts they didn't have anyone at the Apex desk, so I assumed Starports would be the same - I should know better :) . Or else the Outpost was just b0rked 🤔

I thought that being destroyed or using an escape pod transfers you to the last station you have docked that has a shipyard. So it won't spawn you, for example, at the last outpost or surface settlement that you docked, if it doesn't have a shipyard.

Although I might be completely wrong on this. Could someone corroborate?

That's an interesting question, it's always been "the last station you docked at" as far as I am aware, and you can dock at stations without shipyards, so I assume just the last stations regardless of whether or not it has a shipyard.

I'm currently too far from any inhabited systems to test. Maybe someone could test this? Dock at a station that has a shipyard, then at an outpost that doesn't have one, then go to a fleet carrier and use an escape pod: Where do you end?

Wouldn't commiting a crime and then hand yourself in work for these cases? You'll get sent to the nearest detention centre. I don't know if there are many of these outside of the bubble.

Tested it. I end up back at the outpost.

Haven't flown a stock sidey for a while... I forgot what it was like :)

Well, that's strange. Doesn't that mean that you could get stuck, unless someone gives you a ride?

(Ok, there's always the "unstuck" button, but I really like to think in terms of the game universe itself, not magic buttons outside the game that break the reality of the in-game universe.)

I was gonna say something stupid like "would a large ship end up back at the station (was even thinking of testing it)" until my brain kicked in.

I am having a bad day, after testing in the sidey I started to head to my home station and ran out of fuel. So 2 kabooms in one day, both self-inflicted.

I am having multiple "old man moments" today :)
