Make "Planetary Vehicle Hanger" double up as 2t cargo rack

Fdev, please make the SRV hanger double up as a 2t cargo rack.

Its a bit silly that, currently if you fit a ship with an SRV and no cargo racks...

You can go down to the planet, scoop 2 units of cargo with your SRV but somehow you can keep those 2 units in the cargo bay when if you dock the SRV to the hanger.

This will be a great help to explorers who can use the 2t of cargo in the SRV hanger to house limpets for repair limpet controllers etc.

The SRV looks like it folds in on itself when stowed in the hangar - which would not leave space for the two cargo canisters.
Not sure how the 'reality' argument stacks up - I was looking at my SRV next to a Guardian Orb the other week and it doesn't look like one will fit, never mind 2..

Thinking through the proposal it seems to introduce as many issues as it resolves
  • If the SRV storage is part of the overall storage then what stays in the SRV when it deploys? the same as you last scooped in it? Often not the right answer so you end up spending more time flipping cargo between ship & SRV
  • 2 is not enough space for limpets as you synth 4 at a time
  • The interface to load/unload the SRV becomes more complex as you can now load (to SRV)/unload (from SRV)/swap items (SRV <-> Ship).
None are insurmountable, but then again they aren't with the current system 🤷‍♀️

Robert provides a good explanation although I can also see the sense of the OP's request. It is a bit daft that you can fill your SRV with 2t of cargo and then not be able to get into the ship with it ... what actually happens by the way ... does it just not let you board ship until you've jetisoned the cargo?

Exactly that.

On our recent circumnavigation I had to leave the Escape Pods I found at the station because my ship had no cargo space, I hope the station staff found 'em ok.

It only folds the wheels and gun turret in. The cargo canisters are (presumably) in the rear hold of the SRV considering they don't show up on the outside.

As such, +1 from me to add the SRV cargo capacity to the SRV hanger. But it means the cannisters stay in the SRV, so the next time you deploy it, it would be full.

Basically I think it should work as follows:

* Any cargo scooped by the SRV stays in the SRV Cargo Hold even when boarding the ship. It counts as part of the Ship Cargo Manifest for purposes of buying/selling at stations, although it does NOT count towards the Ship Cargo Capacity when scooping or jettisoning in space. (At a station there's room to take the cargo out of the SRV. While flying in space there isn't as the SRV is flat-packed inside its hangar).

* An empty SRV Hangar Slot counts as standard cargo capacity (ie, can scoop/jettison even when in space), and has a capacity of 4 (6?) canisters. So an explorer could choose to fit a larger SRV Hangar but not fill it with SRVs in order to gain some cargo space.

* You can only transfer cargo between the Ship cargo bays and the SRV cargo bays when in the SRV or when docked at a station.

* When you transfer cargo from SRV to Ship it only works if you either have an empty SRV Hangar Slot (a given, since you're in an SRV), or space in a cargo rack. Cargo racks are filled first.

* When boarding a ship, if any cargo is stored in the SRV Hangar Slot, it is moved into the SRV Cargo Bay. You cannot board if SRV Hangar Slot cargo + SRV Cargo Bay > SRV Cargo Bay Capacity (2).

* Cargo in the SRV stays in the SRV (unless transferred or sold under the above rules).

What if the cockpit and cargo space folds onto it self? Like a convertible hard top when it on the ship?
Then we're SOOL ;) Doesn't look like it though; at least the Cockpit must maintain structural integrity in order to remain airtight at which point folding the cargo bay together doesn't give you that much extra space in the SRV Hangar..

The SRV hangars make no sense scaling up anyway when converting between SRV Bays and Cargo Rack Capacity.

- A C2 Cargo Rack can hold 4TC. A C2 SRV Hangar can hold 1 SRV (ie 4TC == 1SRV).

- A C4 Cargo Rack can hold 16TC. A C4 SRV Hangar can hold 2 SRVs (ie, 8TC == 1SRV).

- A C6 Cargo Rack can hold 64TC. A C6 SRV Hangar can hold 4 SRVs (ie, 16TC == 1SRV).

I guess TC's are stored 3dimensionally, and if you store SRVs 3 dimensionally you need more internal machinery to rotate them to the hatch so there's more overheads.

Counter proposal - allow SRVs to dock with cargo on-board. If there is available cargo space on the ship, then the cargo could be automatically off-loaded (in part or in whole - highest value items first) but would stay on the SRV otherwise. Whether the cargo on the SRV would be accessible from the ship itself is something that would need to be carefully considered.
