Wanted to get this idea in before ED season 3, with the hopes of it making the cut for season 3.
So, i'm biased, I love small ships, but apart from the fun of them, there is little practical use once you've been playing a long time and got medium and large ships (no small only docking stations that I know of). Any idea would have to add value to the game and cover the majority factors (such as combat, mission and cash)
here it comes;
Imagine if there was a half broken open mega ship on a planet, just the right size for a small ships to fly around in (a maybe even give that death start, millennium falcon feeling, though the tunnels for the death star). there are many type of mission that could be created.
(possible now) Recovery of cargo or data; not sure how the cargo recovery would work, but data points would be easy enough.
(possible now) kill/remove looters; going into the ship and hunting down pirates
(future) Land and walk around the inside, as a sidewinder buzzes past you head
and look for secretes hidden in the wreckage.
(future) Rescuing people from a crash site and medical missions.
(interesting) maybe has sensors work different , so that players can hide in place (game reasoning, reactor leak blocking sensors)
(interesting) a new type of combat, more like qcq (i know, not a good thing) but also with the affect of the planets gravity, somewhere for the most expert of pilots to fight.
(interesting) New areas to race the srv
So that's just some of the ideas, and once such a system was in game, why not do it with caves... have a cave be and instance to an interior, that way the planet dose not have to map sub terrain. For example;
A man made mine, all industrial around a cave entrance asset. You fly up to it, it has a little bit of a structure to it, looking like it goes into a mountain, as you hit the areas, you enter the instance, or maybe have landing pads outside that take you underground, to explore ... stuff.
I think instancing for ship wrecks and mines would be a good idea, hard to think what troubles it would cause trying to make complicated insides on the surfaces of planets
Added:
I would suggests that these sort of small ship mission are aimed at the experienced player, a real challenge, but.. although accident and death my be more common place, we are talking about smaller ship, so less cost.
So the idea would be difficult mission, with high reward, where skill is the deciding factor and not how big your ship is
Even a new player in a small ship could give it ago, and if they have natural skills, they could progress fast... Or seasoned players could take on a new level of challenge... Flying a ship in small spaces and gravity, with drones and other ships (maybe even people later on) firing on them.
