General / Off-Topic Make vapour, not smoke (Info on smoking and vaping)

DISCLAIMER: You should not vape if you are a non smoker or are under 18! Nicotine is highly addictive and unhealthy!
This is my personal opinion only and meant to solely to motivate smokers to think about switching from the very dangerous smoking to less dangerous vaping. You'll have to make up your own mind about this!

For some reason, I started smoking cigarettes a few years back. It's a disgusting habit and very unhealthy, yet somehow it's very hard to quit.

Fortunately I got inspired by a post from Riedquat to google about vaping. I heard about e-cigarettes before but something about the "flair" didn't click with me.
Today I vaporize delicious raspberry eliquid in my Nautilus Clearomizer at 8.5 watts and run 3.5 ampere through it from the 300 grams of solid stainless steel of my VTR akku pack. Even though I blow thick vapour plumes at my monitor I will never have to wipe thick stinking tar off it again. I already know I will never ever smoke cigarettes again and I won't miss them. Puff. Gone.

Vapour is just steam from elquid and since it isn't burning, it only contains the things that are in the liquid. Normally that is propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, distilled water and aroma. All of these are generally save, they don't cause cancer and are used in a lot of things like food, inhalers or creams. From about 1000 different cancerogenous chemicals that are created by the burning of tobacco at 700 C you only have the nicotine left to worry about. While it's highly addictive, bad for your blood pressure, technically a neurotoxin it generally won't kill you. Nicotine won't cause cancer. I would recommend any smoker to switch to vaping because it's easy to do and reduces harm to you and others immediately. Then start to reduce your nicotine dosage slowly until you are nicotine free. Switching to vaping leaves you with no cravings and a lot of new interesting flavours to try out.

While there haven't been any long term studies on the effect of vaping there have been studies that show that the content of vapour itself is about 100-1000 times less harmful than cigarette smoke. Here are some studies. The current medical opinion is that it's far less harmful than cigarette smoks, and works better than nicotine patches because vaping gives you a very similar kind of experience as smoking.
You'll have to make up your own mind. There is currently some sensationalist fear mongering going around, but if you smoke already you won't care about that since you like to live dangerously anyway... But please do your own research.

An important part for stopping smoking and switching completely is that you get a good starter kit for a satisfying vaping experience. Even though you might think that steam has been around for awhile and should be fairly easy to generate, the technology is rapidly evolving. If you smoked a pack a day like me you can easily afford to invest about 200 € a month into cool shiny new toys, that will end up looking far better on your desktop than buckets full of ash trays. Theoretically you can save a lof of money with this. There is a vortex full of information and if you're a geek like me, you'll get sucked right into it.
For a good start, I would recommend getting an akku "iTaste MVP 2.0" and a clearomizer "Aspire Nautilus" and a selection of eLiquid. It will cost you around 100 € but it will last you longer, and it's better than getting something crappy and spending more and more trying cheap stuff or in the worst case giving up. You can't go wrong with this and you'll already save 100 € the first month!
Flavours are highly subjective and there are thousands of variations, but I recon that things like vanilla or fruit will be ok for most. Try to find a reputable source. Please don't drink the eliquid. And if you have children, for god's sake keep it out of reach or locked, since most of it smells tempting. The PG / VG mixture determines how hard / smooth the liquid hits your throat when vaping. Try to get 50/50 for a start.

Well that's all. I hope I managed to convey some of my excitement to you if you are a smoker. If you are not a smoker, then you shouldn't start! If you know a smoker, I recommend to tell him about vaping (Only If you would like him to live longer, that is). I hope this won't offend anyone and will be left here under off topic discussions. Vaping has a good chance to stop the health epidemic that is smoking and could save many lives.

European Free Vaping Initiative

I switched to vaping a couple of years ago and, like you, will never go back to cigarettes.
Unfortunately it appears that the European Parliament want to regulate (and probably tax) vaping into oblivion. You can help prevent this by joining the European Free Vaping Initiative.

I hope im at least more than vapor.

The best is not to smoke anything. No smoking, no vaping

You're right of course! I hope I made that clear :)
If you can quit completely, then that's best and you should it. But it's easy to say, and hard to do. Vaping is a good alternative because you won't "miss" anything about cigarettes.

The biggest problem with the regulation I have is that they force the european countries to pass legislation to ban online discussion about e-cigarettes. The rest of the regulation is not ideal and unnecessary, but limiting my freedom of speech is unacceptable.

Please everybody sign the petition to force some sense into those knuckleheads in the parliament. Vaping is the best chance to remove the largest preventable cause of death. It also saves your money because of lower insurance costs.

Here are some more infos about health risks of vaping vs smoking:

what! Is this accurate? I neither vape nor smoke, I was just gonna jest that "vaping" sounds suitably sci-fi for an elite forum topic but this reeks worse than scuzz scraped off a smokers cpu fan.

Completely agree with you Dejay, I took up vaping instead of smoking 2 years ago and haven't smoked a cigarette since. From 20 a day to nothing, immediately.

My instincts tell me this is more to do with taxation than trying to ensure vaping is a healthy alternative. The Governments didn't care a few years back when only a few people were doing it, now because it's proved successful, popular and isn't being slammed by the same taxes that regular anti-smoking aids and cigarettes are, the UK government suddenly wants it regulated (so they can tax it heavily).

The only personal upside is I've cut from the heaviest Nicotine dosage in the UK (24mg) to the lowest (8mg), hopefully by the time the regulations come in next year I'll be able to give it up completely

Vaping should not be done indoors even if there are no specific laws against it.
It negatively effects the health passively of others who breathe the nicotine aerosol unwillingly.
A study calculated the nicotine passive emissions, they are 10 times less than a normal cigarette. But It's still a harmful substance in the air.
If they received a complaint the police could deal with someone vaping inside a public building, and also environmental health could investigate.

Yeah who knows? :S
It's also possible that big pharma wants to keep pushing their nicotine replacements (that were proven not to work in most cases) or the tobacco industry wants to keep selling death sticks and both are lobbying. But taxation is probably a reason too. Or it might just be hysteria because it's something new and no long term studies have been done.
So far no scientific or medical reason could be found that justify any of the heavy handedness.

Yes I totally agree with you. And the vaping has more and more of success

Just a little addition:

Cigarette smoke also contains something called Monoamine oxidase inhibitor which increases the addictiveness of cigarettes. About 3 weeks after stopping smoking you might get withdrawal from this "anti depressant" when the reserves in your body vanish and this can make you moody or sad.
There are also other side effects of quitting smoking that can be confused with side effects from starting vaping.

I haven't smoked for 30 days now, have already reduced my nicotine dosage and I'm really happy with vaping. Sometimes I still crave the strong nicotine rush of a cigarette but I don't look back at all.

All good. I quit smoking for about 6 months some years ago, then I started to dream about smoking. Smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipe...kipper, anything. Every night. So, I bought a pack again. It was cruel. 6 months and no problem then it started. I guess I should have been stronger and withstood the offensive...

Tried the vaping but it has so far not been good enough for me to quit the real thing. Stay on it man!

I will :) Vaping is more fun. Blowing use billowing clouds!
Maybe you just need a better vape setup? If you know someone who vapes, ask him to try out his best vape, maybe that will convince you. A good tank like the aspire nautilus and especially eliquids that you like help a lot. I'm all over RY4 and hazelnut atm :p

I gave up smoking cigarettes 6 years ago when I went onto vaping (yup, I'm an early adopter). I have never treated it as a means to give up smoking completely - it is simply a safer & cleaner alternative to get nicotine into my system. I "smoke" it around my daughter without any worries whatsoever.

The Government can do one.

Just to add on to that - I've converted a lot of people (smokers) onto vaping, and the advice I always give is - do not buy these cheap ones out of a garage or corner shop. They are rubbish, and will just put you off & make you crave the simplicity of a cigarette.

Invest a few quid in a decent one from a specialist online supplier like Totally Wicked or Liberty Flights (google them). Make sure you get a good battery (1000ma at least) which will last you all day between charges, and one with some kind of tank on it which stores enough liquid for your needs. Make sure you get plenty spare parts too.

It might seem expensive, but it's nothing compared to 400 cigarettes in the UK.
And you'll never have to buy another. :)

I agree. About 3-4 years ago I tried Greensmoke and went back to cigs & cigars.
Since I got a tornado-T tank from totallywicked (rebranded JoyTech?) I put down cigs and never looked back. In Oct. it will be 3 years now.
Currently smoking an apple/watermelon mix and I go back and forth. Sometimes I still crave some Tennessee Cured but it's all vaping now for me.

Oh, I recently got a newer Tornado Tank RCS which is even cheaper for atomizers and I like it even more.

For the last 18 months or so, I've been using the Odyssey from Totally Wicked (which is designed and built in the UK, unlike most which come in from China and of varying quality). It comes with a battery compartment, which to be honest I had no end of issues with, but I've recently swapped it for variable voltage batteries which are brilliant. The connector (510) is the same as my old Tornado Tank which I had previously.

The RCS cartomisers are much better too - no need to prime them before use.

If you're interested in quitting go the doctor or cessation clinic and ask for champix (varenicline). Its not suitable for some people but its a wonder drug imo. :)
