Making ED like Taco Bell in Demolition Man

In the movie Demolition Man all restaurants are Taco Bell (or Pizza Hut depending on where you live).

I see lots of posts and threads suggesting, requesting, or in some cases, demanding that FDev introduce a feature that other games have. This is not limited to just FDev and ED of course, in fact is a common request in every game I have played, regardless of genre. Everytime I see one of these thread/posts it reminds me of the aforementioned movie.

I like to play different games within any genre for the different ideas and experiences (or menu options to keep the analogy going). If I want living ships and biodomes, I could just go play NMS, why would I want it in ED?

I would love it if New Era ended up being something totally different, that no other game has ever done. I am not holding my breath obviously, but it would be great. Whilst I love tacos, I don't want them to be only choice (pizza is a different matter, a pizza day keeps the doctor away).

I admit it would be fun to bring my wizard to Borann and magic cyclone all of you nasty, nasty griefers and pirates into a pile and throw magic bowling balls at you. (I would do the same to miners but their screams would haunt my nightmares for never :) ). I know magic doesn't exist in this game (*side-eyes anaconda's hull and moves on), but if devs followed these requests, that is pretty much what we would end up with.

So I was wondering why do some people want all the games they play to be full of the exact same ideas and content?

That's not what they want. Most "critics" want Elite to first of all meet the standards of engaging gameplay reached by many other MMOs. And then, sure, it would be nice to have something completely new. But considering Frontier's track record, that's hardly a possibility. Elite has solid pillars: the feel of space, the flight mechanics of the ship, the artstyle, the soundscape. But it also has many problems that keep it away from reaching excellence, both if you consider it an MMO and if you consider it a singleplayer game.

Turn the question around: sure, if I wanted to land on planets with plant I could play NMS, but then I'd have to trade something off. It's like if some NMS dude on NMS's forum would ask: "why do people want spaceship to handle like those of Elite?". Well, because they are objectively better. in the same way, there's many, many things that other games do objectively better than Elite does.

Call me a hypocrite but yeah atmospheric planets in ED would be awesome, so you sorta got me on that one :)

There’s a difference in wanting all games the same and seeing a core concept that was made better somewhere and suggesting it’s utilized.

it’s like going to restaurant and having an expectation of what good customer service is, or a suggesting a place to buy plates from because the ones they have are garbage and you’ve seen sturdier elsewhere. Doesn’t make the restaurant the same.

What's a taco bell? And why go to Pizza Hut when you got Italian pizzerias around?
Taco bell is an american mexican chain restaurant. And pizza hut was an alternative in-movie reference. I agree if you want pizza go to a real pizza place. I live in an area where nearest chain food place is 50km away, so we have wonderful selection of all sorts of small, family owned food places, include a couple of excellent Itallian Pizza places.

Something different, if done well, would be great tho, IMO. FDev's abilty to do something well or not is a completely different discussion.

Yeah I noticed something that is often mentioned when discussing what is viable feedback to fdev. Is what your suggesting going to require minor effort? If it’s not it’s pretty much universally excepted it’s bad advice to fdev. How low is the dang bar?

Is that what you mean cheesy mate :)

When I first started playing Elite I found myself trying to correlate everything in it to my experiences in other games (often without success!), which brought me to two realizations. Frontier had made something outside of the mold, and that other games were becoming rather formulaic and I had been conditioned to accept that.

When someone comes up with something successful in video games(and just about anything else that can be marketed), everyone else tries to cash in. Start ups takes huge risks in the hopes of making it big, the ones that succeed are often absorbed into the conglomerates or they grow into big business on their own, to forsake risk and ingenuity for the safest bet. Eventually much of everything is a shallow reskin of whatever has the best proven sales record, until the next great thing comes along and it all starts again.

For ED, we often see comparisons to other space games and other MMOs, as well as suggestions to make ED more like those others. I don't think this is inherently bad, but I am also glad Frontier is willing to push ED (for all its flaws) in its own direction. I've also seen a lot of other games, in an effort to please the masses or cover every aspect of the market, bloat their games with a bunch of rubbish that did little more than dilute what otherwise might have been a greater core experience.

But what a flight model though! (And Audio design!)
Still the best thing in Elite imho - more of that please! (Honestly - it's what sucked me in, in the first place! Its amazing!)

FDev should be braver with their content - they obviously have some talented people working for them, and the whole game is pretty niche. The 'lowest common denominator' probably won't work for Elite.
Be big. Be Brave. (But listen to your committed player base!) 🤗

Totally agree.
I get that silly response all the time where someone dismisses a whole game as being no worth comparing when all I'm talking about comparing is the one feature.

If you play MMOs long enough, and watch the inevitable trainwreck that most of their forums become, you quickly realize one absolutely truth:

The vast majority of players have absolutely no idea what they want, and just don't realize it.

People will demand something, and demand something, until the company finally caves and implements it. And what happens? Many of the very people demanding the feature or change will be right at the front of the protest screaming about how the company is out of touch and will go under because of this.

ED experienced this very thing. People begged FDev to focus on bug fixes first before adding new features, a very common and (IMO) very reasonable request. So what did FDev do? They pushed back FCs and focused on a bug-fix release. Please lost their damn minds. You'd think FDev had just reset the servers or something. And some of the folks raging were the very ones who previously asked for the bug fix patch.

Players see something, think in the moment "oh man, that would be great! Gimme that!", and then realize all too late that they don't actually want it. As a software developer, I can assure you this affliction is hardly limited to video game stakeholders, but it is most relevant here. FDev will never win. They will never be able to appease the loudest forum goers, because the goalpost will never stop moving. By the time they accomplish the last demanded goal, it'll be too late and folks will have moved on and no longer want it.

Of course, I'm sure I'm no better; I have my own list of things I want and wish they'd do, but who knows... could be they do it and I hate it all lol. So really, as long as they don't remove VR I'm happy. Everything else I'll trust them to do right.
