Making Galnet News a better experience

Before the Galnet News were implemented in the game, back during early beta, I had high hopes for them. I have to admit that so far, the whole system hasn't lived up to my expectations. Right now, this is basically how Glanet works : each station has game-generated news entries listing the player ships that passed through the local system in the last 24h, listing the top player bounties, and listing the current most wanted commodities. Aside from that, there are the daily handmade news entries, which are well written and provide some background to the game. But there could be so much more.

Now, here are some ideas I've been thinking about, that could make Galnet much more interesting to use. They mainly rely on pre-written sentences that could be completed and put together intelligently by the game, without any human intervention. Some of these ideas imply minor changes to other areas of the game that could greatly benefit from a more useful Galnet board. These ideas put together would allow users to have a much larger amount of news items to read, with relevant information for their career activity, all this requiring little to no work from the writing team beyond creating the base content ; the game would dynamically generate its own news items. Here are my suggestions :

- Galnet could inform players of the nearest conflict zones outside the current system. Each sentence in the following example would be independently selected from a pre-written database, pieced together to form a news entry, and completed with relevant names and numbers from the server's database :

"Casualties from the ongoing conflict between X and Y factions in system Z keep growing. Faction X has been dominating the battlefields for some time, but faction Y is gaining more followers with each passing day. The current conflict, following the quick rise in influence by faction X, has so far claimed the ships of 135 commanders, and has been going on for 6 days."

- Within a system with conflict zones, local news entries could detail where exactly the conflict zones are located, and give them a little background. Example :

"As we write this article, a massive battle is taking place above planet A. Faction X intended to strike where President Y and his government live, but information about the assault leaked and faction Y managed to amass a large fleet above the planet to defend it. Reports state that 2 capital ships have been sighted. 50 commanders have lost their ship above planet A since the battle started."

"Skirmishes have also erutped above planet B, where a fleet of light fighters bearing the faction Y flag have been trying to block the fighters from faction X from leaving the shipyards on the planet's surface."

- Galnet news could be a source of info for bounty hunters, pointing them towards a system where they could find more abundant wanted targets. Once again, each sentence would be selected independently from a database to create a unique entry. Examples :

"Miners in system X are now on strike, following a recent surge in pirate activity in the system. The syndicate leader for miner faction Y has stated that too many workers have lost their lives to heavily armed pirates, and demands action from the Federation, which system X is a part of."

"Traders are now avoiding system X, due to recently increased pirate activity near the star's navigational beacon. Heavily armed fighters have been reported to scan and assault any ship carrying valuable cargo, and the local autorities are overwhelmed."

- Within a system with intense pirate activity, instead of randomly generating instances every time a player jumps into the same area, each nav beacon and RES could have a constistent and predetermined level of piracy, resulting from factors that could be presented in a news item. Example :

"The faction X mob are currently roaming the rings of Planet A. The Federation has increased police patrols, with Viper wings scanning every armed vessel. Witnesses claim pirates have been harrassing miners aboard large ships, possibly Pythons or Anacondas."

- The latest changes in local factions influence could also be reflected in Galnet news bulletins. Considering various statistics, such as how many % influence factions have gained or lost in a certain amount of days, and taking into account the factions types (dictatorship, mob, democracy, etc.), news items could be generated to present those changes in an immersive and interesting fashion. Examples :

"The democrats of faction X have turned to their president (procedurally generated name), waiting for action in regard to the growing threat of dictator Y, leader of faction Y. In the past 3 days, faction Y has seen an important increase in its influence."

"Today the Federation has announced that corporate faction X is now the leading force in the system, following its steady increase in power over the last month. Faction X has so far been a great example of the efficiency of the federal political system."

- Frontier gathers a lot of personal stats on players, which could be used in news bulletins, either as examples on a certain topic, or as a news item in and of themselves. Examples :

"This week, the Empire received detailed data for a staggering 1600 systems, provided by Commander X after an extraordinary journey beyond the borders of inhabited space, including the discovery of 30 black holes and 20 neutron stars. The Empire paid Commander X a generous 100 000 000 credits for the gathered data."

"[news about local conflict zones] An ace pilot has distinguished himself during the skirmishes above Planet A. Commander X has indeed taken down 136 faction Y ships, fighting alongside faction Z pilots."

- Certain missions given by a station could be advertised in local news, possibly with a link to the mission page. This could also be a great way to advertise community goals in a neighbouring system. Examples :

"The hunt for pirate X continues. Faction Y has placed a contract on pirate X after his repeated assaults on local authorities. Commanders are welcome to try their luck finding the infamous criminal, in order to earn the 150 000 credits reward daction Y is offering on top of his bounty."

"Faction X in system Y is still gathering resources for the construction of a new Orbis space station above Planet A. Commanders who wish to contribute to the ongoing effort are invited to dock on station Z in system Y where they will receive further instructions. Ample carrying capacity is recommended."

- Holidays like Christmas, and other religious holidays could be celebrated through news bulletins specific to each system, with a local flavour depending on the leading faction. Examples :

"This monday, CEO X has presented his new year wishes at Corporation Y headquarters, congratulating all his employees for the past year's excellent results."

"To celebrate the new year, an impressive parade took place this monday on planet A in front of general X, leader of the Y party, and ended with a great show from the acrobatic patrol composed of five Eagles."

- Given the number of news items that could possibly be generated by such a system, an update to the galnet interface would be welcome, with news categories to pick from, like "Political", "Military", "short news items"... Also, some of the shorter news items could simply slide on a news ticker at the bottom of the galnet interface, to make for a more dynamic and "live" experience.

I believe these ideas could contribute to greatly improve the Galnet experience. With such automatically generated news, each system (and possibly even each station within a system, given they're controlled by different factions) would have more background, more flavor. Upon entering a system, you'd be enticed to dock at the nearest station and immerse yourself in the local atmosphere, reading about the power struggles, hearing the latest prowess of some commander, or browsing the news for info on where to hunt the juiciest bounties. It would give more identity to each system, without requiring an army of writers.

Basically, the developpers would create a large enough database containing individual sentences, that the game would intelligently piece together to create varied news items. There would also be several different phrases with identical meaning, that would be picked randomly, so that each news item in each system would be truly unique even if the message is technically the same. These pre-written bits of text, completed with dynamic data from the servers stats, commander names, etc, would make relevant and genuinely interesting news. Coupled with the handwritten items the writing team is already providing, this would make a very nice reading experience. It would be a nice way to relax between missions or trade runs, or to immerse yourself in the recent events when you log in to the game.

If you have any other suggestions, please go ahead, and if you find these ideas interesting, don't let this thread get buried, maybe someone at Frontier will read it and get something out of it. :)

I can't quote quotes, but that section there, the second option is already in game. As for the other, definitely, where's my +50 rep button?

The effective use of Galnet would indeed benefit the commanders, but I believe they should go on a deeper, more political level. Interaction between the player and political leaders would make for an excellent game mechanic. This might influence the players to read Galnet more on what these political leaders standpoints are, and how to appeal to them. A reputation level where it has details on who your making dealings with, and who you might have the best relations with could be a game-changer. The problem is keeping the game balanced, and the developers of elite don't want their game to turn into eve online's monopoly empire where it's a major pain and almost impossible to get into nowadays.

I didn't know that, is it an automatically generated entry, or do Frontier writers write one every time?

Anyone else has thoughts on these ideas? I thought this topic would deserve more than a couple of replies...
