Making money

Ok, so I recently started in ED. I dont know if im possibly doing it wrong or what the deal is, but making money in this game is terribly painful!!! I am making what, 50k per mission? Ive been here a week now and barely broke 6 mill. Ive been all over the forums, and everything people suggest isnt working....

So, Am i doing it wrong, or that just the state of the game right now?

oh, it's a problem with the game, alright. Making any decent, useful amount of money is almost impossible unless you find your own grinding spot. Poke around on some of the other threads here, some people do have suggestions of where to go.

Google for ***road to reaches*** ,do it!Then go to Rhea for passengeer missions in your anaconda which you brought from exploration data selling...you will be billioner in 4 weeks.

You started in a sidewinder.
6 million buys you either
Eagle
Hauler
Cobra
dB scout
dB ex
Asp scout
Keelback
Type 6
Viper 3
Viper 4
Dolphin
Vulture
Imo eagle (if ranked with empire)
Imo courier (if ranked with empire)

And possibly others I forget.

Along with various levels of outfitting.

Seems to me you are progressing just fine.

That said passenger missions esp when allied pay well.

You went from 10k Cr to 6 million in one week. Honest question: Why do you feel that this is slow progress? For me, this is actually to fast because it makes you skip many cool ships. I have fond memories of flying the hauler for days until i had the money for a stock cobra, and it took me weeks to advance from the cobra to Type-6 and later AspX.

But if you really just want to get millions in a few hours, try bubble exploration: https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/6hhcpq/road_to_riches_web_app/

But beware, skipping content is skipping fun and the feeling of achievement.

The oldest and best advice still stands

Get allied with factions

Find a spot you like and make a home base there

don't rush - enjoy the cheap ships and learning about modules

get some rep with your local engineer - By the time you get access with a few of these you'll make money on the side and get allied with some factions.

Its ok OP, you're not meant to be earning big money early on. First you need to learn how to fly, gain rep with factions, and start slowly building up. Once you get some experience, then the cash will start to flow, and you will find making money in ED is ridiculously easy. If you think its hard now, way back at 1.0 (excepting some bugs/exploits), making money was a lot harder.

Making money from missions isn't mega profriable at the start, although it can help. Sometimes you are best off using missions to supplement your income and start gaining rep with factions while doing other things.

For example, if you would like to do combat, you might take a Kill Pirates mission while going to a RES to do combat.

You should have been here at the start. Barely made 6 mil in a week? lol You have it so good and dont even know it.

I would not change/trade my 1st 6 months of ED for anyone. Those times are long gone now and it seems I am a minority player, but progression was infinitely more fulfilling back then.

That ship has sailed now but 20+ hrs speccing my sidey and saving up for an eagle and similar again to get my adder was gold......

Something deep down inside my 1st World attitude after nearly 3 years of ED tells me you may just have a point there... :D

Ive been here a week now and barely broke 6 mill.

One week and already got 6 mil is quite fast, at least compared to my progress. Hell, it took me a week to even feel like my save file was worth something, meaning I gained ultimately nothing the first week of playing.

Now if you loose that 6million by the next week and don't have a new ship in your fleet, then we might have a problem to solve. At this point, you're doing more than fine.

Those were the days, when ammo cost ate up almost all profits from bounty hunting, refueling 50% of the T-9 did cost 300k+ and repair bills could reach the ships purchase value.
Too bad it has been toned down to basically make ship running costs a mere nuisance forcing you to click the repair/refuel button once a while without any real repercussions to your earnings.

Now you can get from starter sidey to aspX in one day, anaconda easily reachable within 2 weeks if you know what you're doing (not even talking about exploits here).

Maybe the devs will put some sense to the economy there's little hope left, seeing the current development.

Good to see the biollionairevets out in droves to tell the new guy he's playing the game wrong.

OP: the key to making money is to get allied with factions. If you're doing passenger runs or missions you'll notice that you'll get offered better paying missions by factions that you're allied with.
This means you need to find yourself a 'home base' and slowly accumulate relation with the resident factions.
I'd recommend doing passenger missions. Look for an area that has systems with stations relatively far away from the star (>5k LS). Passenger runs to these destinations tend to pay OKish.

I've also seen people mention the guardian ruins missions. These are supposed to be a good source of income as well. If you feel like spending a lot of time outside the game on the forums/wiki...

Just for reference OP, there's a newcomers sub-forum which you can access directly here:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php/75-Newcomers-Forum

That's probably a better place to start because you'll get replies from people who actively want to help new players rather than merely saying 'I remember when all this was fields and it took eight months to make 10k credits'.

How is "you are progressing just fine" not helping?

OP was advised to get allied with a multi factions in a system and to consider passenger missions.

Seems that was help right there ;)

@doctordanny... I am no billionaire

Why is it a problem if those people also started with the same slow progress? Assuming those people didn't farm Quince/Rhea/Sothis/etc?

Why are you assuming people like me are even billionaires? I'm not, far from it. Got about 260 million in the bank, and no, i don't own a Vette. Besides the rank, couldn't afford one.
