Making ship fuel.

I am a new player to the game so forgive me if this has been asked before.
If you run out of fuel i think there should be an option to make some by synthesis like you can with your SRV. I play solo so can't rely on the fuel rats.
I'm thinking maybe if the system you are in has at least one landable planet in it, then you need to land on it quickly before your fuel completely runs out. Once on the planet you use your SRV to search for resources to make basic starship fuel. Maybe the 2 tonnes of cargo space on the SRV is enough for a 7 ly jump.
Maybe this will be enough fuel to get you to the next nearest system that has a scoopable star, a place to buy fuel or just another system that will hopefully have another landable planet that you can land on to search for resources again to make enough fuel for another jump.
I just think that us solo players need another option other than hitting the self destruct button.

"Do you know about fuel scoops, and how they work?"

Sorry, that's a habit :p

Fuel Scoop is a must have - Unless you have a healthy Bank Balance and a FleetCarrier within 2,500ly (With a Full Tank)

You obviously know about fuel scoop.
Now you just need to plan ahead and not jump to systems with non scoopable stars when your tank is near empty.

Thanks for the replies (even the sarcastic ones).
Yes i know about fuel scooping and planning, but some people still run out of fuel sometimes, hence the need for the fuel rats.
I just think we should have a way to synthesize fuel too in case of emergencies.

The only way to run out of fuel if you have a scoop is by not looking at what you're doing. Been there myself, and more than once aborted the charging jump when I saw that I woudl jump to a non-scoopable star with my last fuel. Being able to synthesize fuel in a different way won't help you there.

Lore wise, the SRV runs on a chemical battery (from the type of mats you need to refuel) and doesn't need much of them. Your ship, on the other hand, needs tons of hydrogen.

Hmm. Fuel already now has little meaning. I mean, formerly i used a fuel scoop when traveling, stored it and bought a MRP at my destination (or had it delivered to me if none was available) and was good to go. By now i rarely even equip the fuel scoop any more when traveling in the bubble. A tiny bit of planing is good enough.

So yea, i basically get the idea here: why not simply remove fuel from the game? But you could have said it openly, instead of hiding it behind a "more synthesis" suggestion.

Now, now, gentlemen, I can sort of see where the OP is coming from. After all, it IS somewhat funny that we can synthesize just about anything (and mine for carrier fuel), but we absolutely cannot in any way get ship fuel outside of skimming very hot stellar bodies or buying them at the local gas station.

That being said, there are game play reasons (as well as historical, lore reasons), so it is what it is and I really wouldn't want it changed.

Scoop, CMDR, embrace the wonders of surfing the coronal ejections, scoop every star you see every chance you get, and pay close attention to that little indicator in the upper right stating the class of star you're about to jump to. Memorize "O Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me". Oh, and don't make the silly mistake of NOT scooping every scoopable star you're stopping right next to anyway because "it will be faster." It won't. That's a fallacy that only people who don't know how math works believe in. X tons of fuel will always take Y seconds, no matter whether you do it in one go or several. But if you do it in several gos, you're much less likely to run yourself almost dry, only to find that the last jump ends up next to a T Tauri with no fuel to jump to somewhere you can fill 'er up.

Yes thank you. I just think that we should at least have another option to get fuel. Just for emergencies.

Is there a reason why you are against logging into Open or private for 3 minutes, maybe once or twice in years of gameplay, in deep space, with a known friendly cmdr coming to rescue you?

Am not against salvaging fuel, just thinking why?

I never said that at all.

I know you did not say that. But it would be what it boils down to.

And i am sorry, but paying attention to fuel is not that hard. I play since the beta. During the beta i've lost one ship due to running out of fuel, as i didn't know yet that not all stars are scoopable. Then i informed myself and never again ran into the same situation. That was before we had the fuel rats, which provide another excellent savety net. And yet you ask for another savety net beyond that.

Considering how easy materials for synthesis come in, this suggestion would really mean that fuel would not matter any more. You could just as well eliminate it from the game, along with the Fuel Rats. (I mean, they are a group of dedicated and altruistic players. They could just do other stuff, but they dedicate their time and effort to help other players who messed up, so from a player perspective, they are the best of the best. The suggestion would replace them by synthesis. I don't really like it. )

The Fuel Rats is the failsafe option to get fuel for emergencies. It's the sole purpose of the group.
Other than siphoning hydrogen from the coronas of stars (or gas giants in the ED's prequels), there is also no other way to just generate fuel from the void.

I also think, the few hard consequences Elite still has are a good thing to have. I mean, there's fuel scoops, additional fuel tanks you can equip and other players who can help you out if you really end up without fuel, which only happens if you're unaware.
Even if you only play in Solo, you can log into another mode for the fueling up process.
