Making the move from console to laptop -

o7 commanders,

I am struggling to get Oysessey running smoothly, the game recommends that I run at "high" settings but I struggle to get 20 FPS consistently and the game takes a long time (20-60 seconds) when moving between station/carrier menu screens and also, especially when opening the system map.

these are my laptop specs
<SystemModel>ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401IV
<Processor>AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS (16 CPUs), ~3.0GHz
<Memory>16384MB RAM
<CardName>NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 with Max-Q Design
<DisplayMemory>13874 MB</DisplayMemory>
<DedicatedMemory>5980 MB</DedicatedMemory>
<SharedMemory>7894 MB</SharedMemory>

Does anyone have some tips/suggestions for customising the in-game graphics settings to improve performance, please? The screen & game are both set to 2560x1440

Regards

personally I would try setting low to med to see if fps improve
game probably thinks itsa well cooled desktop
also be aware many apects of the game are still not fully optimized by the developers
so may be disjointed pending on what you are doing performance wise

Laptop GPUs are not as powerful as their desktop namesakes. Really, your GPU offers around the same power as a desktop GTX 1070.
Before you do anything else, tone down the resolution to 1080p, which is the resolution your graphics capabilities can really support.

That ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401IV is a slim gaming laptop, consequently with a low power CPU and a low power GPU.
That RTX2060 Max-Q is rated at 65W TDP, while in regular gaming laptops an RTX2060 will be rated at 85W - so you'd get about 75-80% of a regular laptop RTX2060.
The CPU is also a low power one, with a Default TDP of 35W (but nevertheless, it's still a strong cpu)

So if you have a 1440p display and you want to play at native resolution try medium settings and also use AMD FSR (with a quality setting) and see how it goes
IF you are still not happy, try 1080p on high, without any FSR this time. iF you're still not happy, lower the settings to medium (EDO still looks nice on medium settings)

Not at last, make sure the laptop is well ventilated, eventually use some pads, 1-2cm tall, to raise it from the table and give it a better airflow
(for my laptop i cut some pieces of an yoga exercise mat - they're usually about 1,5cm high - perfect to raise the laptop a bit more from the table)

I want to say thank you to everyone for their helpful suggestions. I am currently running 1920 x 1080 high settings and getting 30-50 FPS in space high combat zones :) the lag opening menu pages have improved slightly. Basically, you have made the game enjoyable for me to play on this laptop. I have yet to try ground combat but I expect to get my rear end handed to me.

I am also looking into raising the laptop up to improve ventilation.

o7 to all & have a great day
