Making your mark in the galaxy

Having played the Beta's, I had considered myself somewhat of an experienced pilot in the galaxy. With the release of Gamma, I suddenly found myself lost in space...usually returning to stations with more fines than anything else. And what happened to all of the combat missions? I've played for the last 5 hours and hardly gained any experience or money. Am I missing something? I feel like a noob all over again.

I would love to hear some of my fellow commander's tips for making it in the galaxy!

Start by running missions and opportunistic trading. Either revamp your sidie or aim for something bigger/better. Then go in whatever direction you want to go in.
