Mamba Successor Next

Doing a Mamba successor for the next ship after the clipper is the right move. There are only so many roles left to fill, and one of them is something that is faster and hits harder than the Python 2, but has less all around capability.
A Mamba inspired design would be fresh and get us away from the flying wedges.

People bag on the Mamba as just a worse FDL, but I think that actually gives it some character. I did exploration and xeno tagging in a Mamba, it was fine. It was like road tripping in a classic car - sure there were some difficulties but you make up for it in style.

The Corsair, new Cobra and Mandalay all look too much like the Reaver ships from Guardians of the Galaxy for me. Give me something cool to buy.

Better: change Mamba to be a sidegrade to the FDL, as it was intended. Converging the weapons more OR making it steer tighter would be great. Both are serious downsides.

Python-2 (much like the Mamba) has a very large top-down profile. That and the bad weapon convergence are the only reasons it's considered a sidegrade to the FDL. I don't know about Python-2's side and vertical thrusters during boost, but on the FDL they act great. Better than most small ships, even.

But no more powercreep, please. Corsair is an excellent ship, it shouldn't exist. What reason is there now to play a Python Mk 1?

Python-2 has LLLLMM hardpoints. "Mamba-2" could have HHMMSS. That's about the same firepower. However, give it either good convergence or decent steering along with the great speed. Not both. And let it have a large profile.
Make sure FDL doesn't become obsolete.

That's sounding like a 'small Large' ship to me – actually it gives me the vibe of "Imperial Heavy Clipper", a mythical beastie that would be what the Clipper was supposed to be. Not supposed-to-be as in the Medium ship we all wanted, but the Clipper that deserved to take a Large pad. Fast, great handling, poorly converging Huge hardpoints on the nacelles, large profile.

As an aside, is it time they released Huge turrets? And perhaps even a new weapon type that only came in Huge – I've been dreaming of something with a 'wave motion gun' feel to it (a beam that requires a charge-up and then has a few seconds of continuous fire). Huge hardpoints bore me a little with the fairly limited choice, and the lack of Huge turrets is a kick-while-it's-down to the viability of any kind of large turret build.

This is what I'm hoping for next. I'm doing exobiology in my Cobra V and I'm enjoying it, but there are still landing frustrations to be had because it's not really that small. I don't really see an Eagle successor as an explorer though, and would prefer either a Moray Starboat (from earlier games) or something entirely new.

The Mamba is already a FdL upgrade... there, i said it! Nah nah nah to all the FdL lovers out there.

However, FD have said they are done with medium ships for now, its most likely large ships coming, maybe some small?

The Panther Mk2 sets the tone for the coming year.
