mamba temp heat fix

enjoy it while it lasts! G1 large beams thermal vent working far too well when striking a target the heat goes down to 2%, i dont think this is intentional.
i have reported the "bug"

I put a 4A beam laser and 4 x MCs on my Mamba.

I engineered the beam with G5 Efficient and thermal vent and remote-engineered the MCs with G5 long-range (no XFX) and the MCs cause overheating. [sad]

2 large thermal vent beams, I would expect to cool any medium ship to frost in seconds. Working as intended I believe.

did the 4A beam have the same effect

did the 4A beam have the same effect

It did until I put the thermal vent XFX on it.

Started off with the laser in one fire-group on it's own and then another FG for laser+MCs - for maximum damage.
Eventually, in an attempt to minimise heat, I put the laser and MCs in separate FGs, so the laser is never firing while the MCs are.
So, imagine my surprise when the MCs, alone, caused overheating?!

*sigh*

Yep thermal vent has the ability to frost over the canopy. Used them on my Vette for a little while and it would frost over often. Didn't use them on the C4s either.

So the secret to fly the mamba whit out
Cooking is beams whit thermal vent ?

I have 2 large and 1 huge beams in outfitting whit thermal vent.
So my mamba will freeze over then.

how the frak does a laser cool down a ship :(

surely this should be a side effect for projectile weapons if anything (take the heat from the ship by heating the metal projectile slugs!)

IF FD insist on these fantasy side effects i wish they would put a "little" thought into it to just pretend there is science behind it!.

dunno if residual heat could be used to excite the gain medium to amplify the light?

anyway, we have healing beams, plasma that affects targeting, ... the list goes on and on. one more naive than the other. elite fully entered cartoon land with engineers. embrace the masses. (if modes weren't enough already! :D)

This is very intentional.

It's not a bug and thermal vent was recently buffed.

Sure it could, and with a good enough heat pump, a warm supply of coolant could be the main source of power for the laser...it would just not be particularly efficient, require materials that don't exist, and do things the game doesn't do.

good to hear. to the point of almost freezing the ship is a bit extreme, but why not. i'm a bit out of touch lately, but could this be a good re-enabler for stealth mechanics, or are these still moot in combat?

Mostly still moot. You can freeze your ship by shooting someone, but you also resolve yourself by shooting them, so you see little benefit in a 1v1.

Can be a bit more useful when fighting groups, as the one you aren't shooting may have difficulty targeting you. It can also pre-cool the ship before a disengagement attempt, giving one more time in silent running (but you cannot benefit from thermal vent if silent running is already engaged).

did the 4A beam have the same effect

Thermal Vent on beams has always applied a huge amount of cooling. The biggest change was the removal of spiking heat if you aren't hitting a target. Efficient 5 also helped make them more popular again. Since Engineers, it's been entirely possible to run a 4 Rail, 1 Thermal Vent beam FDL even after the mega nerf. No one's really done it though, since everyone jumped on the PA and LR/Focused bandwagon. The damage potential of efficient beams isn't particularly stellar, even with fixed beams.

Except it used to be that if you missed, your heat would spike dramatically making all but fixed mostly worthless for Thermal Vent. I believe it also had a 10% damage penalty, but I might be thinking of Thermal Shock.

I run 4 ventbeams on my FDL, and while it frosts the ship up it doesn't do it that fast. I think the issue here might be related to the mamba's heat capacity (or whatever they use as an equivalent), since as I understand it different ships have different size buckets for the amount of heat they can hold. Ships like the diamondback have a very large thermal capacity compared to the amount of heat they can ever be expected to generate, which is what makes them "cool".

The effect of this on the mamba is that heating and cooling effects have an outsized effect.

I don't mean to be pedantic, I completely see where you're coming from, but physics is so wild in what's possible and the strange things that happen at the sub-atomic and quantum level, that I believe that almost anything is possible.

Granted, this isn't the exact same thing, and the laser doing the cooling still needs to be cooled itself, but this is a 1970s discovery....3304? ;)
