I believe you're referring to the "red zone" and it is showing you that your angle of approach is too steep.

Just use the Docking Computer. The DC can put you on the pad in less than 2 minutes from a 7.5mm elevation.

Unless you are trying to prove something, the wasted time involved with manually landing at many of these bases isn't very productive for trade mission efficiency and the like.

No offense, but for me the funnest part of the game is actually flying and maneuvering the ship. Maybe someday I'll invest in a DC... but for now, I prefer to bang my way into the docking bays.
