Man VR has ruined this game for me

On the contrary, for me, it just made the game for me. I barely paid attention to the game when I bought it a couple of years ago. Too complicated and too little time to learn. Then I got a Rift and I made like 400+ hours in a couple of months before obligations forced me to get away from the game again.

Typing .......

I use x56 hotas and no keyboard.

I do however use voice recognition, mainly as i am lazy and cant touch type.

i have but don't use currently Voice attack.

I took about an hour to set up windows speech recognition to be pretty damn well accurate for my voice, and use it to Spell talk system designations into the box in the galaxy map, or just talk into chat, all you have to do is to turn it on before you start elite.

I would suggest using a push to talk method, as my wife and kids noise level was often loud enough to start the recognition engine.

If you have the money, i would suggest something a tad more user friendly and option filled, such as "naturally Speaking". I hardly ever type now, as dictation is so much faster. Punctuation however is problematic.

Elite was a system seller for me. I bought an Oculus only for Elite, and wasn't disappointed. I fully agree - once you go VR on Elite, you won't go back.

Text input is a PITA in VR, so I usually won't respond to chat messages from other CMDRs. Using the galaxy and system map also is inferior to playing on a flat monitor. But both are minor aspects to the game. Flying your space ship is a completely different experience in VR, compared to playing on a monitor.

I don't play any other VR games. Tried a few, but the only one I played for more than a few hours was Trackmania, until I had mastered all VR tracks.

I'll definitely give the new Microsoft Flight Simulator a shot, once it's been released. But until then, I will stick to VR space flight in my trusted Python. An experience that's second to none.

yeah absolutely impossible to go back and play on a monitor... Elite in VR is such a gamechanger and made my childhood dream of owning my own spaceship come true!
After 1600+ hours it still casts a smile on my face when I get back to be inside my ship!

But more and more other games just don't work for me any more looking at a flat screen... I remember the same phenomenon when I got hooked on Ultima Online in 1998 suddenly I couldn't really care for singleplayer games any longer.. had to be multiplayer with PvP…

now its the same with VR its hard to play anything else... sometimes I think oh this or that is on sale I should get it but I know I rather spend my time in VR with Elite...

VR is ridiculous and should be banned!

Ridiculous as in VR I am still happy after several months to sit there in ED or X Plane open mouthed in amazement.

Ridiculous as I can’t sleep due to incessantly browsing the internet for news of the next big thing (I’m talking to you, HTC!).

Ridiculous as I am using a Lenovo, which cost 150 quid and is probably one of the worst hmds.

Ridiculous as I can’t enjoy 2D gaming anymore.

I moved from PS4 to Elite on PC specifically for VR, love it. Also ignore text messages as they're a PITA to reply to, I only use 2D occasionally for SRV MAT harvesting as VR SRV work makes me nauseas. Considering upgrading my CV1 with something new soon just for Elite. I might also try fallout 4 in VR, I recently bought a 50' 4k tv and FO4 looks stunning on that with HDR (PS4).

Just be aware that FO4 was not very well optimised for VR and requires a beefy computer to run, and still looks pretty poor compared to the standard version. Coming from SkyrimVR, I was fairly disappointed with the performance and looks.

First time I bought it, I ended up refunding before my 2 hour Steam grace period expired. After upgrading my computer I tried again and thought the performance was acceptable - though there’s still an issue whereby smooth locomotion gives this judder/stutter when moving; I think it’s something to do with the avatar making constant small height changes because the terrain is not smooth (going into noclip mode cures it, but isn’t exactly practical for the game).

Thanks for the heads up.

For flying, even if it is insanely expensive, the DCS World planes are out of this world. I can even interact a little with the cockpits using my touch controllers. The base game is free with two planes, the Su-25T and the TP-51 Mustang. Then the "Flaming Cliffs 3" DLC is not that expensive, but if you want some of the newer F-18 and F-14 you better wait for a sale.

IL-2 Battles is less sophisticated but also does a nice job.

I had the Rift, now have the Rift S, but still play around 70% pancake - even in ED - but the VR sessions are well worth the wait.

It is quite true that scale in VR is way better in ED, even little ships are actually big... The first time I flew out of a station in VR was a real WOW! moment.

FO4VR is certainly not well optimised and is 'messy' but I have finally got the original FO4 expansions working in VR (thanks modders!) so have been enjoying the 'extra' content, even if I can only get away with 1.2SS - at least the Rift S with better clarity helps with the game.

Does anyone know if the demo version of X-Plane supports VR? I'm not sure my system will smoothly run X-Plane in VR without dialing the graphics way back, and X-Plane isn't cheap (even on sale), so I'd like to test it before plopping down the coin. In the meantime, IL-2 should keep me in VR awe (or in barf-bag agony).

I found IL-2 to be very demanding on my hardware so I ended up refunding it.

To scratch my WW2 flying itch, Warthunder has done alright for me - it’s free, performance is decent, and you can set up scenarios against bot aircraft. It’s very much a sim-lite with all the realism settings turned up, but it’s good enough for taking a Hurricane up for a spin over Kent and shooting a few Messerschmitts.

VR headset ruined VR gaming for me atm. After playing around with valve index.. yeah, sure, it’s a lot more immersive and tactile experience, but I quickly lose interest playing in 1280x740 (my estimate) resolution, or whatever the real resolution is behind that 2k by 2k (or something along the lines) shown by steamVR @ 100% in Elite. Please wake me when there is a real 2k-per-eye experience @ 120fps or at the very least 90fps. Guess I am spoiled by good 2k/4k monitors 😁
