Ships MANDALAY Disappointment

I actually like the Mandalay ship. It captures the main characteristic players want in their ship:
  • Centerline style cockpit with an excellent 180-degree view.
  • 40+ LY FSD jump range.
  • Guardian FSD not required for 60-63 LY FSD jump range; but substantially more with Guardian FSD Booster and engineering choices.
  • SCO FSD and SC efficiency delivers the advantages of the FSD boost without the hefty penalties.
  • Optional combat role with sufficient engineering to counter the built-in weaknesses.
  • Optional Internal Module flexibility.
Overall, the Mandalay would be my #1 Top Pick recommendation for ANY new player beginning their journey in Elite Dangerous; IF, I had to pick one ARX pre-built ship. It has all the features to begin the game with a positive experience. Plus, it is a far superior choice over the ARX DBX.

As a concluision to this. Ive set up the Mandaly as best as I can with a matching setup on my DB EX, no weps, maxed out engineering, SCO FSD and same optional stuff for exploration. Now for something I didnt expect to see having forked out 33000 ARKs on this fabulous new ship, Im seeing it in the Buy ships section of SHIPYARD for 17000 credits. REALLY !!!!!
Anyhow as I havent unlocked the Guiradian stuff yet my DB EX has a range expander the mandy doesnt, the DBEX will pass 70 Ly per jump, the Mandy tps out at around 65. So as for being impressed definitely not, both versions have been sold and will be returned to use once I get the Guardian Range extender thing unlo9cked. Just bought an FC so the Rhea hedge fund had taken a huge hit..

This is only for sale for credits(unlocked) if you have bought the arx option. Will be a while until it's available for those who don't spend the arx.

If I am planning to engineer this ship for long range should I purchase the "plain" or the "Stellar Mandalay?

The "plain" one, because you're going to change almost every module and you're not going to have the full benefit of the "no rebuying cost" gimmick (probably only the hull...). With the ARX saved you can buy the Quest pack, which is nice...

I bought the plain one to unlock buying one with credits at the shipyard. I was able to engineer an 89.60 LY exploration and exobiology ship. The SCO FSD is going to make it easier to run down the HGE's to restock my data stores. Thanks for the advice.

Pretty happy with mine ... almost 1000MJ shields, efficient beams and overcharged multis for defending itself; 32T cargo for rares PP2.0 trading (as/when FDev re-enable that ...); 3C operations limpet controller for salvage / hacking; SRV and surface scanner for exo-bio and still a minimum of 50LY jump range. And it's a joy to fly.

Not sure about dedicated explorer but it's killing it as a long-range, bubble-jumping, multi-purpose machine!

I have been using my Mandalays for some time now, both as Explorer

as well as multirole.

The only criticism would be that they are almost too good, because flying her is so effortless. The supercruise behaviour, SCO behaviour and heat efficiency in particular would be good enough if they weren't quite so outstanding.

Some observations:

- With 4D Thrusters Dirty/Drag you are usually fast and manoeuvrable enough as long as there are no PVP contacts.

- In mountainous regions, you can get stuck with the front landing gear deployed, creating hilarious situations.

- The ship will land manually almost anywhere, but you should make sure that it doesn't fly away, as it is very difficult for her to find a place to land automatically in mountainous regions when you call her back. The DBX seems much better in this.

- 5C Bi-Weave with 6B SCB is an OP combo. Normally the shield is enough to prevent damage. But when the going gets tough, the SCB irons everything out.

I am a sucker for a good view. But there are certain ship I simply do not like. ASP is one of them. Just dont like the engine sound.
My long term explorer ship had been DBX despite the dismal fuel scoop speed. I like the view, I like the industrial feel. Next to DBX, I use Krait II for everything. #1 reason, the view. I went to few exploration with it. Sure I had to sacrifice some jump speed but I could carry everything for a long voyage without sacrificing great view.

When I heard of Mandalay and all the info about it being an explorer to take on Anaconda jump range, of course I had to try it. I got the standard version using ARX. I was glad to see I could achieve greater jump range and still carry everything I needed. I can even add an extra fuel tank and travel to the far outer reach that I always wanted where no CMDR has gone before.

My greatest disappointment, The View!

I use Oculus Rift S, but still the restriction of side view is just too much. That little window on the floor just dont cut it for me. Why an exploration should have lots of top and back view above my head, I dont understand. I want more frontal and bottom view. Or is it just me? I have been spending lot of time inside the Mandalay cockpit visiting different planet, hoping I will fall in love with the ship. But, I dont think it is going to happen.

Krait II has served me well over the years and looks like it is still fulfill that role for a while. That 4A fuel scoop in DBX really gets into you after a while. But DBX still my most favorite exploration ship like many others. The thinner body, frontal, side view from the cockpit offers plenty for a CMDR. To be honest, I just cannot imagine myself in the Mandalay cockpit for months at a time.
