Mangrove Pack

Hello its me again.
I thought about a cool and unique type of pack, covering some more coastal regions and ended up with enough for a tropical mangrove themed pack and a coldwater themed coastal pack.
This is the mangrove pack and trust me, there are some cool unexpected critters living in the mangroves.

Right now in the game there are to my knowledge only 6 animals commonly associated with mangroves, the probuscis monkey and the saltwater crocodile from asia and the bairds tapir, the caiman, the giant otter and the jaguar from southamerica (pls correct me if im wrong and there are more).
I would like to flesh out on them, especally as highly aquatic themed tropical houses or even downright mangrove houses are some of my favourite rare gems in zoos and everybody that visited the mangrove house in the burgers zoo would agree.

So first about the building set, i would suggest something along the line of a mix of a caribbean themed more modern set and a stilt houses inspired set, maybe inspired by the more modern, asian ones?
This would be a good chance to include some more vanilla pieces, while still having a great chance for themed pieces, like pirate related stuff.

But now to the animals!

The first is one that you probably dont expect, but this near flightless bird only lives along the water ways of south america, with a special fondness for the mangroves.
Im talking about the hoatzin, a weird, funky looking bird known for his stinky smell, weird looks and being the only living species in its group.
Sadly they are just a honorable mention, as they arnt held in captivity for some reason, probably related to their special diet of leaves.
Still a cool mangrove animals that defenetly deserves the honor spot on this list.

Im gonna start with the exhibit animal, as it is actually quite the hard choice.
There are two primary choices, the mudskipper and the fiddler crab.
Both are very unique and appealing animals, that would also both be a first for their groups of fish and crustaceans respectivly.
Personally i would lean more towards the fiddler crab, but i feel like both have very good arguments to why they should be the new cool kid on the block.

Next in line would be an asian fan favourite, the small clawed otter!
These little fellas are living in water ways all over south east asia and also love the habitat inside of the mangroves.
As the most social and most common species of otters in zoos they are heavily requested by the community and would trive both in tropical houses and smaller freeflow exhibits.
Making a great contrast to the derpy looking giant otters they would be distinct enough and also usefull enough to be a worthwile inclusion as our small otter species.
Another thing ofnote would be, that they are very commonly held with orangutans in the same enclosure, a very unique parring that we dont have like that in the game yet that opens up lots of cool ways to design exhibits, both for them and their tree palls.

For our secound and most exciting spot, we have the west indian manatee, another animal many members of the communtiy have an eye on, even though they arnt sure if they would make the cut.
Many see them as the only fully marine species that they want in the game, and where would they fit better than in a coastal/mangrove dlc?
These charismatic chonkers are true fanfavourites and would add something completly new to the game and would act as a wonderfull flagship both for possible mangrove or tropical houses, but also for the dlc.
Also these durpy see cows are just super cute

In the waterways of southeast asia lives another small mammal that would like to join the game, the fishing cat.
These aquatic cats live of crabs and fish like our exhibit animals and have learned to swim and dive to catch their favorite snacks, going even as far as developing webbed paws.
With their special markings and the fact that we only have one small cat in the game at the moment, they would make a great fit for this dlc.
Also its a cat. If that doesnt boost sells idk what would.
1625523180946.png

And lastly we have the boat billed heron, a southamerican species of water fowl thats commonly kept in europe with other waterfowl or in southamerican aviaries in zoos.
As a normally nocturnal species, thats often kept awake in zoos during the day, they would also be usefull for nighthouses or maybe even a night tropical house?
Sounds cool to me, especally with these wide beaked birds.
When they arnt lurking for prey over the water they often hang out in little breeding colonies of 4-6 pairs in small trees.
Another noteworthy thing would be the fact, that they are the most commonly kept heron from the neotropics in europe, aswell as the first heron in the game.

And thats it! I hope you liked the list of animals in this kind of aquatic pack 2.0.
I tried to pick many diffrent species and think i succeeded in creating an appealing package, especally with the combination of the small clawed otter and the manatee.
I do like the heron and i feel like it deserves to be in the game, but idk maybe there is a southamerican mangrove lover thats more deserving of its spot (Capybaras dislike mangroves, i checked)
But what do you guys think?
Is this pack stupid? Or would you agree with me that this would be a must buy if it something similar came out?
I hope you enjoyed reading this and cant wait to hear what cool mangrove animals you guys know

I think this would have potential, but i would expand it and include swamps and bogs in general. That way we'd have more choices.

About exhibit animals, I'd go with those 2 choices, both excellent (I used to have fidler crabs in my tank many years ago). Another candidate would be crayfish/crawfish (we have an electric blue one right now named Mr. Krabs).
Also, assuming exhibits get a major overhaul, green anacondas would be an excellent choice.

Now moving onto animals, the ones you chose are great. Since you're including birds, I will mention some birds that would fit (these are all ideas):

  1. Osprey - a raptor that's found all over the world, I believe, associated with swamps
  2. Roseate spoonbill - just the colors alone
  3. Kingfishers - any will do
  4. Shoebill stork - like an ugly duckling
  5. Herons - iconic swamp birds. I'd choose the great blue heron
  6. Egrets - similar to herons, at first glance I would get them confused

  1. American/Eurasian beaver - it's a crime not to mention them
  2. American alligator - I mean, we have 1 croc, 1 caiman, and the gharial. At least 1 alligator
  3. Coypu - basically an aquatic rat. I've seen these, they're invasive here in the US
  4. American black bear - apparently they inhabit swamps, which is good to know
  5. Platypus - not actually crimefighters, but still cool to include

And that's all I can think of

Love the Animal Choices. The London Zoo kept them once. The Bronx Zoo kept them too and I know that they never bred there. I assume it was the same Situation in London. The German Wikipedia Page mentions that they are almost never kept in Zoos, so maybe there are some Zoos that still keep them.
Reminds me a little bit of the Situation with the Quetzal. It's another South American Bird which is also almost never kept in Captivity but there it is because they normally kill themselves in Captivity. I think a single Zoo in Mexico is keeping them successfully.

Absolutely love the Inclusion of the Exhibit Animal Ideas. Even though we really need some kind of Fish finally in the Game, I think I would prefer the Crab (who knows if there would even be the Chance for a Crab in another DLC. The Coconut Crab might fit into a Island Giants Pack but I don't think this would be very likely because we already have the Komodo Dragon and 2 Species of Giant Tortoises). It's a really beautiful Crab and I would love to see it in the Game.

The Otter might be a interesting Inclusion. I think Otters normally play way more than other Animals so maybe Frontier could increase the Amount of how much they play for this Species.

The West Indian Manatee is a Animal that I absolutely want. Already had the Idea that it could be included in a Florida Pack but it also fits really good in this one. I bet a Manatee Tank with Walls that are covered in Mangrove Roots and also occasionally Roots reaching down in the Middle with green Water would look absolutely awesome.

The Fishing Cat is also a interesting Inclusion. Completely forgot that they have webbed Feet. They definitely need the Ability to dive and use the Underwater Feeder.

The boat billed heron looks really nice. More Birds are always appreciated. But I think it would need to be kept in a Aviary, so we would need a flying System first/introduced with this Pack to properly implement it?
I would really like to see some kind of Duck (if there are any in Mangrove Forests).

We definitely also need new Species, Shapes and Sizes of Mangroves in this kind of Pack (but please Frontier, not only 15 m high Trees that are totally unrealistic to have in a temperate Zoo and which make creating Tropical Houses very annoying). We also really need more Plants for the Water Surface. I would absolutely love to see Duckweed in the Game (just don't know if this Plant would fit into a Mangrove Pack)

We could keep Orangutans together with Proboscis Monkeys and small clawed Otters for a relatively big Enrichment Bonus :D

Actually the heron, while most of the time more fancy in an aviary, can and is held with other waterfowl in open ponds in zoos. They do with them the same as with flamingos, pelicans and other similar birds where there feathers are cut/plugged on the wings so that they cant fly.
If we get flying in the game, i would love that to be a toggleable option, giving all birds either the ability to fly or making them ground bound.
This would also allow for things like the open american bald eagle exhibits without sandbox mode/looking silly

I don't think Feathers are ever plucked. I think they get always cut instead. Plucking the Feathers (at least that's what I think you wanted to write instead, because Google Translate gives me only one Translation for plugged) sounds painful and I assume the Animals could get hurt that Way and get Infections.
Would absolutely love to see this as a toggleable Option. If there are no heavy Gummy Rags that I can hang in Front of the Entrances, I can still add Vultures like I wanted in my Elephant House

(who knows if there would even be the Chance for a Crab in another DLC. The Coconut Crab might fit into a Island Giants Pack but I don't think this would be very likely because we already have the Komodo Dragon and 2 Species of Giant Tortoises)
I think it is possible. We have Madagascar, Hawaii, New Zealand, Tasmania (I'm including it as an island).

Tasmanian devil
Kiwi
Nene (Hawaiian goose)

Those are the big ones. Then fill in the rest.

My prediction was that one of the two packs was gonna be atleast somewhat popular and the other my guilty pleasure.
Seems like i was right lol.
This one is just way more marketable with more requested animals

I wanted to start a thread about this concept and saw you already made one!

Anyway, it is over a year later, so my current choices would be:

  1. West Indian manatee
  2. Fishing cat
  3. Green sea turtle
  4. (Brown) pelican
  5. (Giant coconut crab)
  6. (Marabou stork)
  7. (Scarlet ibis)
  8. Fiddler crab
I think this pack concept could be so cool! Either as a scenery pack or as an animal pack. The manatee is a must. The pelican is very popular, the sea turtle would be loved, and we would get the first small cat! The fiddler crab is the obvious exhibit animal. In the animal pack there would also be the giant coconut crab, and two new wading birds for South America and Africa/Asia. Obviously the newly introduced game mechanic would be Full Aquatic animals! Only the manatee makes use of it.. for now! 👀
