Manual scooping issues when mining?

I know manual scooping isn't optimal ;-) but i'd run out of limpets and had just cracked open a core of opals. I've never had issues manual scooping before but these opals were near impossible (in an Asp explorer). I only got about 5 before the rest despawned. I know they're only worth £1.6 million EACH but i was still pretty gutted. Anyone else had issues or is the Asp just a pain to scoop with?

Anything that is carrying any velocity at all is quite tricky to scoop. Best strategy is to see which way it's going, get in behind it and scoop at a little more speed than is comfortable. There's no doubt it's gonna take longer than normal though.

I have had issues too in a Krait Phantom. Seems like things weren't always lining up properly with the targetting.

The fragments are rather big so you are more prone to bump into them when trying to scoop. I, too found the AspX rather cumbersome for manual scooping. It seems like there is something in the way at the bottom, even when you line it up perfectly. Aiming a bit above the fragment on the scooping aiming interface helps. Anyone tried manual scooping with a Python? They are already a pain with normal sized fragments.

But, with a Viper IV, manual scooping is a pleasure as always. The size of the fragments might even make it more easy.

I've also wondered whether having weapons retracted would make a difference, but didn't get to test it before all of the lovely, lovely opals vanished. Next time i'll check whether that could make a difference. Or better yet, next time i won't run out of limpets!

I did not test the mamba in beta regarding manual scooping, but in live it seems that cargo bounces off the scoop, i had to fly a bit faster to grab the goods.
Asp shouldn't have any issues either, since it has no hardpoints in front of the hatch.

I've tried manual scooping with a Python, I was ready to pull all the hair out of my head. I think you are right about the core fragments being big enough to cause interference with scooping. I tried several times on multiple fragments, and was only able to do it successfully once. I thought maybe the bottom hardpoint was the cause, but retracting it made no difference. It seems like the fragments are hitting and bouncing off the bottom hull before they make it to the cargo scoop.
