Engineers Marco Qwent is a Cowboy Engineer

So, here it goes, I decided to take my Beluga over to Qwent because it desperately needed some heat management via a Low Emissions Power Plant upgrade. To my delight, I had just received some Micro Weave Cooling Hoses from a passenger I had just dropped off, so I could do a Grade 2 upgrade. Fantastic I thought.

I roll for the upgrade, and get a good roll. By chance higher power capacity as well as better heat efficiency thanks to secondary effects. Great!

So then I go to Felicity Farseer to sort out the FSD, I only had enough for a Grade 4 (screw those datamind wake exceptions). But I roll and get a decently reduced thermal load, and get the range up to 28LY from 20.

Now, knowing I used up all my power plant mats with old Qwenty, I decided just for kicks to look at the Grade 1 Low Emissions upgrade from Felicity. To my utter amazement ALL the sliders were BLUE. And not just a little bit blue with mostly red, but completely blue and to the right.

That says one thing to me... Felicity's Grade 1 upgrade is a much better upgrade than Qwent's grade 2. Because she was offering to significantly improve what Qwent had already put on the PP.

Naturally I took the upgrade and it was an improvement over Qwent's shoddy work.

Qwent is a charlatan and a hack.

(It would be interesting if a Dev could confirm whether there's indeed a difference in quality of work between the Engineers?)

They're both the same.

Grade 1 Low Emissions Powerplant is 6-20% improvment
Grade 2 is 11-31%

It just means you got a low-ish Grade 2 roll and then managed to trounce that roll with a Grade 1 roll... which with this blueprint is quite possible.

I used the Grade 1 Low Emissions PP for quite a while - I had a LOT of iron and ended up with a 7APP for my Annie that had 25% better heat (0.4 improved down to 0.3), power output was up by 5-6% AND it had lower mass.
The secondary effects don't really help the Grade 2 roll; they offset the negatives, but can't really exceed the original standard module by much (maybe a little bit?). Grade 1 can if you get good rolls with good secondary effects.

That is rather a large overlap there ... I can see why that's happened in that case. Aw, but it would have made things interesting if the quality of work differed between engineers ._.

Same here - I rolled like 30+ yesterday for my special Eagle build where I need both more power and reduced heat, with similar results, though not as good as yours.
Low Emission Grade 1 is where the money is!

Qwent is merely a brick wall to Palin. Qwent should be shot dead, and referrals to Palin should then come form Farseer.

Z...

Agreed. I don't actually want anything from Qwent, other than the invite to Palin, and I'm beginning to wonder if I actually need grade 4 or 5 drives.
