Martian moons missing

Someone mentioned this on a gamefaqs I never noticed before but they're not there, not on the map at least. Did something happen lore wise or is it just that they're too small?

Everyone's too scared to go to Phobos anyway ;)

Also see Bethesda's biggest release this qtr. ;);) (shame there isn't a 'nudge' emoji otherwise we could enact another famous Python sketch)
It's tickling me that I remember a statement about this omission and I THINK Braben kinda gave a winky answer that it was after all 3300+ Now, whether that's a cheeky ret-con of Space 1999 being set on Phobos or something I don't know. And, in any case, I may have dreamt the whole thing. I do eat a lot of cheese AND I keep odd hours, so...

Possibly destroyed/used during the terraforming process. Also, Phobos is slowly moving closer to Mars, so eventually it will collide or break up, although thats estimated between 30-50 million years, not the 1,286 years in Elite.

Phobos is in a declining orbit. Phobos could have entered the atmosphere, broke apart and crashed into the planet. Deimos has a stable orbit, so I have no clue why it isn't present. Even if Phobos entered orbit and was destroyed by tidal forces it would of stripped a large portion of the moon's material and formed a planetary ring before it completely fell apart and crashed to the surface.

We've discussed terraforming Mars in a few of my astrophysics classes. One theory suggests breaking up Mars' moons and spreading the dust across the surface to decrease the planet's albedo. Lowering the albedo would cause it to warm, necessary for terraforming.
