Massive performance drop between Steam Horizons & non STEAM....

I purchased Horizons beta via frontier store.

However... I already had ED purchased via steam so when Horizons beta came I just used the steam version and started the launcher outside of steam in order to access horizons.

I went to frontier store and linked my purchase to steam and thus took my horizons to steam...

Installed steam version last night... Ran it with 800 runtime and the judder was severe... It was like Horizons beta was.

Tried it twice and same severe judder.

I then went back to my previous install which as I said was based on original steam ED but launched outside of steam to give me access to horizons. Judder gone on same 800 runtime.

So I wonder how many people with VR and launching horizons via steam are not realising they incur massive performance drop? What could the cause be?

Is horizons 64 bit only?

Horizons is a 64bit only install, whilst I believe ED is either 32bit or 64bit.
Personally, I saw a significant hit on frame rate on first firing up Horizons. Took me a couple of hours to believe that the 64bit version also included a graphical improvement (for the same supposed level). I dropped my graphics settings a bit and now IMO it looks like it did in 32bit and runs like it did also. Just means that FD have introduced some additional niceties for those with the appropriate hardware.

I don't think you understand:

I was running the same Horizons last night... One copy via steam download and the other bypassing the steam launcher icon for ED. Same game, same graphic settings... Horizons downloaded via steam has massive judder and the one accessed without steam is smooth.

Had the same experience and ditched using Steam to run the game. Been playing great ever since with last night being near perfect.

Might be worth me taking it off steam completely then. At the moment it's stuck somewhere between the two. Horizons is running off my original steam ED but launched outside of steam via the launcher icon I sent to desktop.

I could just completely uninstall ED from steam and download it via the frontier launcher/updater.

Dunno Steam OVerlay?

There's a tickbox to enable/disable it in the properties for the Steam entry, maybe try that?

Did you start the game through the normal game listing or though Steam VR so it hooks properly into the game at launch?

And yes, Horzions is 64 bit only

Start the game through the normal launcher but until I installed the Steam VR app it would not attach now it attaches automatically and I don't hit anything to do with Steam. Think it just needed the interface that Steam creates with that app.

Finally found an overclock for the GTX 980 that actually works, kicks it up to 1500 MHZ and doesn't crash

  • Temp Target 80 Degrees C
  • GPU clock +170 MHz
  • Power limiter 122%
  • Mem clock +470 MHz
  • Voltage + 87Mv
  • FAN RPM 50% (remains silent)

That's an amazing overclock especially on air.

What brand?

PNY GEFORCE GTX 980

Every time I tried any OC before it would crash the game. Not sure but maybe going direct and win 10 has a positive effect on being able to do this also. Card runs stock at 1120 MHZ ran the game yesterday at 1512 MHZ at 43 degrees so it works and with this game every little bit helps. I did notice a marked improvement seemed like more happening around me in Solo mode, ships flying close by have more detail etc.

Ran 4 hrs straight today GPU temp made it up to 64C a couple of times other than one crash, which I still don't know what it was like I lost the server or something, everything ran incredible no issues. When it crashed the one time the HMD blacked out and monitor screen started skipping around. I could hold the HMD and move it on screen in stuttering fashion so was able to get to the menu and shut down. First time that has ever happened hope the DK2 isn't going on me.
